Hi. I've been on Effexor for about 10 weeks. I did not gain weight at the start, but in the last week a few pounds have plopped on. I am not eating more and I have been staying active. Has anyone found that it took a while for drug-related weight gain to set in? Has anyone found that it leveled off?
I don't want to eat much less than I already do, and I am trying to set aside time for exercise every day. If the trend continues, it may be a deal-breaker for this drug. Thanks, rockgal |

I have never heard of that happening. There are alot of things that could be going on including water-weight etc... If it keeps up you should tell your doctor and maybe check your thyroid.

Effexor made me put on 10 pounds in 7 days. I had to stop as I couldn't stop eating. I lost some of the weight a few days after I stopped. Some of it was water retention, these tablets practically switched my waterworks off ! The rest was eating too much. Pity as I liked the a/d effect. I was not overweight in the first place and I'm pretty active.

I gained weight on effexor. started after about 6 weeks Most of the ssri's that cause weight gain dont do it right away, especially if you havent taken ssri's before. It can take a few months, but it happens with alot of them. If effexor is not right for you, dont try to quit cold turkey. the withdrawal is horrendous.

Hi. Thanks for your input. Sounds like my experience is not unique then. Things seem to have leveled off for the moment, but I'm watching cautiously....
I've actually been on Effexor before, but only lasted a few weeks due to side effects. My taper/withdrawal at that time was unpleasant, but not horrific (fortunately!). I know people can have a dreadful time with it. Anyway, this time around, I'm trying a micro-dose (12.5 mg) since my pdoc and I have since learned that I often need only pediatric doses. rockgal |
