Hi...I have been on several different anti-depressants since 2002. Effexor worked at first but then I discontinued when I felt like I had a grip on things. I then started taking it again when my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer and it didn't work so I switched to Lexapro. That didn't work. Then I tried Wellbutrin and nothing! I went on Cymbalta for a few months and that didn't do anything either. My doctor recently prescribed Paxil and Wellbutrin together but the nausea was too much.
Recently, I got my hands on some Adderall. I was completely out of my funk within the hour and accomplished so much for the entire day. I was calling my friends and family when they normally have to call me. I cleaned my house, got all my work done, and ran a couple of miles. I had no side effects either. Is Adderall a treatment for depression or is it possible I have ADD since no other medication worked like this? |

I'm not sure what you mean by you 'got your hands on some Adderall.' I would not advise taking prescription medication without a valid prescription and suprervision by a physician. Adderall is a controlled substance which means it holds the potential for abuse. It is also illegal to be taking prescription medications not prescribed for you.
Adderall is indicated for the treatment of attention deficit disorder, not depression. Adderall XR Prescribing Info |

I know that Adderall is prescribed for ADD. I asked whether or not it is possible that I have ADD rather than depression because the drug worked so well. My doctor knows I have the pills because he gave me a prescription a couple of years ago when I was finishing a class...I just never took it after I got it filled and I ran across them while I was cleaning out my cabinet so please don't lecture me about the 'dangers of taking Adderall and prescription meds'. There have been more deaths from the other pills I've taken like Paxil, Effexor and Wellbutrin. Plus, I take Xanax which has one of the highest abuse potential rates and I have never had issues. I am not looking for a high...I am trying to get rid of this funk I am in.

Antidepressants are sometimes augmented with stimulants. I take focalin (along with other things) and find that a little extra energy and motivation help me get more done and feel less depressed. I couldn't comment on whether you have ADD, but maybe it's worth talking to your doctor about whether a stimulant (maybe combined with an AD) might be a good plan for you. Good luck.

I also take Concerta & Provigil with my other bipolar meds. Without them I couldn't function due to excessive daytime sleepiness. I've been on the same dosage for about 6 years now & don't feel any need to increase it or abuse it. I also took Xanax for 17 years with no dosage increase or abuse.--Suzy

Really, I would not focus on what it's supposed to be, what it is classified as, etc.
The bottom line is it works for you....no doubt....and it helps you and the other meds didn't. Some people go through years to acheive the efficacy you've reached with adderall. Stick with it and learn from it. |

My pdoc gave me dexidrine for depression. It helped with the depression and come to find out helped me with concentration, memory and other ADD symptoms. We found that it soes not really speed me up, but slows down my mind. I am able to get things done, so I am less anxious and depressed.
