Missed a dose by eight hours. That's all it takes for me to get brain zaps, extreme irritability, and significantly impaired function. And I'm on a very low dose.

I've been on Effexor twice. And twice it took me to some very dark places...

![]() BTW just for reference... I have been taking it for many years. Before an MHMRA doc switched me, I was on Prozac which was working just fine and did not have the awful withdrawal effects. It also gave me a nice bit of edginess and focus which Effexor does not. I know that my withdrawal symptoms are experienced as side effects for others. I'm okay as long as I don't miss any doses. |

I took Effexor XR for about 5-6 years. I also took the non-extended release Effexor back in the mid-1990s when it was new. Three doses per day and brain zaps and tingly lips and fingertips if I was late with the midday dose.

Why did they switch you from the Prozac if it was working?
![]() I have a friend who just recently started taking Prozac, after they tried her on a bunch of expensive newer AD's that gave her awful side effects (Viibryd is one I remember especially didn't work out well), and the Prozac happens to works out really well for her. She's the happiest I've seen her in years. I think the low price point makes her a little less depressed too. ![]() Sorry about the zaps and stuff. No fun. ![]()

Why is a good question. It was a long time ago but I think it was pretty much a whim of the pdoc. New med... hey lets try it on some patients. In other words... he switched because he wanted to
![]() Just for future reference I don't recall noticing any difference from the switch. The second time I stopped taking Effexor I suggested to my doc that we try Prozac to ease the withdrawal. It worked out great for that. It didn't work at all for depression. I eventually went back to Effexor. My doc offered Viibryd and even gave me some samples but I didn't try them. Five hours later the zaps have subsided along with the irritability. Sometimes it takes longer. Also I didn't mention it before (embarrassment) but sometimes I experience something close to a barely controllable rage along with the other things. This is the way it is. Thanks for listening to my rant. |

The same doc who switched me from Prozac to Effexor told me I was being phased out as an MHMRA client a few months after the switch and I had to stop both. I could have easily done harm to that doctor. I asked my original case worker at MHMRA what was going on. She told me that in reality, I and many other clients were being dropped due to state funding cuts. I eventually found some grey market Effexor online. I became my mother's caregiver about this time and I mentioned the situation to her PCP. He became my doctor and prescribed both the meds I had been on. I needed them... badly. |
