I've been prescribed 0.5mg lorazepam PRN for when I'm highly anxious.

Pdoc said it should about 30 mins to kick in and last 3 - 4 hours. Is that correct?

Would like to hear about any of your experiences on it?

I was prescribed this to deal with gynecology visits (CSA past makes me highly anxious during them). Unfortunately, it did not take the edge off even a little bit...I felt like I didn't take any medicine at all.

I hope it works for you!

I take it as a 'knock-out drug'. If it's evening and I'm feeling very very low, I'll take 1 mg and try to sleep. Usually I fall asleep within 30-45 minutes. One time it took hours for me to fall asleep - pdoc said that, should that happen again, I'm allowed to take another 1 mg.

I have no experience taking it for anxiety.

Good luck!

I took it years ago and yes it does help. The effect of 0.5 MG, for me, was subtle. More of taking the edge off rather than obliterating anxiety altogether.

But that's what you want. You want a dose that can allow you to use your other skills to deal with anxiety when it becomes overwhelming. You don't want a dose that will obliterate the anxiety (because that dose is sedating you too much at the same time).

Good luck!

It's weird, for the first bit I took it, it only helped by making me physically tired, which only helped to barely take the edge off. I'd only take it if I was terribly anxious and could just stay at home for the night and crash. Now it helps mentally as well, and actually does something for anxiety. I still prefer not to take it if I'll be out in public and have stuff to do, because it makes me a little sleepy, but I can if I need to. It also helps occasionally if I need just a bit of help relaxing and going to sleep.
Definitely try to stick to just taking it as needed, because it can build a tolerance.
Good luck!

anxiety means excess epinephrine and cortisol. Increasing your GABA with ativan can temporarily counteract this. But over time ativan decreases GABA production.

It helped but not as well as my other med. Also it made me sleepy for a long time after I took it, more than a day. But then I'm weird.

Melt it underneath your tongue and dont swallow what it melts into, instead salivate in order to make it kick in faster. Don't eat or drink for 10 mins either after doing this to get the full sped up effect. Lorazepam doesn't really taste like anything and Clonazepam tastes like candy so this method works well with either of them.
