Can anyone recommend a good medication for schizophrenia? I've been on zyprexa gained 50 pounds in a short amount of time. I'm on Latuda my psychiatrist told me it wouldn't make me gain weight but I've gained 10 pounds in a month and I'm thirsty all the time. I can't afford to gain anymore weight. I talked with him and he said that thirst is a side effect from Latuda which I personally don't think so. If anyone could recommend a weight neutral drug that you've had good success on I'd appreciate it.

Geodon is supposedly one of the antispychotics given in which a person doesn't gain weight, and it may actually decrease weight ... Do a little research on it online. From what I understand, it is low risk and similar to Latuda in many ways. If you tolerate antipsychotics well, it might be worth a try.

Since I have been on Geodon I have lost ~50 pounds. The only side-effect I have noticed is dry mouth but isn't horrible. It is well-known for being weight neutral, as well as not raising triglycerides and sugar levels like many others.

Although, when I took it twice a day, the morning dose wiped me out during the afternoon, but the dinner dose doesn't so I take it once a day.

There are a few other weight neutral anti-psychotics. I can't remember their names but are newer drugs.

As always, your mileage may vary.

Abilify is a popular AP that theoretically causes less weight gain. Restlessness can be a real issue though.

My psychiatrist said that it is not as weight neutral as suggested by the trails though. Now it's been around a while it is clear it can cause sedation & weight gain. Probably still less than others though.

In the end of the day, everyone reacts different to meds to so it hard to tell. Personally, I gained no weight on Olanzapine (Zyprexa) despite it being one of the worst offenders.

I hope you find something that works.

My roommate just switched to Abilify a couple of months ago, and loves it. She's losing weight like crazy - she's also on a really strict diet - and she has more energy. She says the med makes her happy.

I agree with the other members that Geodon and Abilify are the two anti-psychotics least likely to cause weight gain.
