Has anyone had any experience with their pdoc prescribing naltrexone to curb self harm urges? I saw my pdoc today, and she suggested that since my SH has been getting worse lately. I said I'd read up on it, but said to hold off on prescribing any more medications. The name sounded familiar until I got home, looked it up, and I remembered it's usually use for opiate or alcohol abuse (I'm a nursing student).

I don't have issues with drugs or alcohol, so this seems soooo off putting for me to have this prescribed as an off label use that she'd suggest it. I'm actually mad now after looking it up, and how'd that be perceived by other medical professionals if I said I'd use it.

So weird, because I was just prescribed this today and was gonna search for threads on it. In the reading I've done on it, it is definitely prescribed for/has potential for a lot of off-label things. Don't worry about how you might be perceived for it, you can always explain anyway. It does come in 50 mg pills, because higher doses are used for dependence, whereas for these other uses it's usually prescribed under 5 mg. So you have to either have a pharmacy prepare it for you or mix it with distilled water yourself to mess with the dose, which my doctor failed to mention.
I know I felt a little weird filling the prescription, but if it works, who cares. I'm trying it for depersonalization, hoping it'll possibly help with anxiety and depression too from what I've heard.
I hope it works well for you if you decide to try it.

Never on it for that, but was on Suboxone a long time which has this ingredient....after stopping the med is when I started SI'ing.....may have been PAWS involved (Post acute withdrawal syndrome) or maybe the Naltrexone prevented this before......who knows

I was prescribed it 3 weeks ago for manic urges. Ive never taken an opiate.
For the first 4 days i felt high on it. Then it evened out and now im pretty stable.
I feel like im not getting the rush i would from doing something manic, i would assume its the same rush as sh?
I take 50mg in the morning with no food.

Thanks for your input everyone. I think I'm going to hold off on it now, as I'm nursing my youngest and there's no research if it's harmful or not. I'll keep in my mind in the future.
