Can you cut ODTs (Orally disintegrating tablets) in half? For some reason my pdoc must have written my lamictal Rx as ODTs not regular pills, so now I have 90 of those instead of 90 of the regular pills...and I'm supposed to go in 12.5mg steps which means I need to cut the 25mg pills in half. Can I do that with the ODTs or do I need to get the regular kind?
*I am planning on calling my pharmacy/pdoc tomorrow, it was just too late by the time I got home from work and I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone knew. |

I take Lamictal too, but it's the regular tablet kind (i.e., the ones you can't chew). Even I have trouble cutting those. They seem to crumble on me. :/
I think part of the problem is, I don't have a sharp enough knife. I think if you had a sharp knife, you could do a clean cut even on the OTDs. (BTW, I tried with a steak knife, and even that wasn't sharp enough. You need a real sharp kitchen knife.) So, I think you'll have a tablet cutting problem either way. I would just try cutting one of the ODTs in half with a very sharp knife. If it ends up crumbling on you, you can at least eat the powder. (It's not ideal, but at least you can ingest it.) |

I have 0 issues splitting the regular ones, but I use a pill cutter. I'm just wondering if you can split them and have the medication still be even/effective since they come in blister packs.

Pharmacist said they're fine to split, so as long as I don't have issues with them crumbling I should be good

Pill cutters are good to use.
