I went off benzo's about a week ago. They were affecting my memory and when I wouldn't take the same amount every day I would feel terrible. Now that I've gone off them the withdrawals are horrible. The first few days I had extreme anxiety and even though I was taking other meds like Seroquel and Lamictal The withdrawal seemed to block out any effect of my other medicines.
Yesterday the physical symptoms kicked in. I felt like I had a fever I was sweating and today I've had nausea and the same physical effects.
I took some Vistaril for the anxiety and it helps some but the withdrawal seem to be inconsistent and chaotic.
My question is, being that I've taken them for about six months how long will it take for the withdrawals to stop?
I found out through research that these medicines originally were only prescribed for emergencies, now doctors seem to give them out like candy.
I will never take them again after what I've gone through.

I've heard it hard for some people. Best of luck.

The immediate withdrawal symptoms do taper off. I'm not sure how long that takes, but some people say they don't feel withdrawal symptom free for years.

I tried to go down to .25 in the morning and .25 in the evening, but the withdrawal symptoms scared me. I'm not sure I can totally get off because of the stress.

Be proud of yourself!

It can be hard I was on kolonopin for like 2 years and had enough with how it made me feel..

So I just stopped one day (was on heavy dose 2 mg 3x daily if I remember correctly) and man did the symptoms start about day 2 or 3.. Sweating anxious than throwing up for days. Took a long very long time to become free of them.

Which I was 'til recently

Now I'm on Xanax 2mg 3x daily.

Best of luck and keep us posted!

Remember we are all dammit going through some of the same things in ways.

I don't think anyone could give you anything like a precise timetable. It seems like with only 6 months of use the physical part couldn't take too very long. The wanting it part may take longer. There is also rebound anxiety along with the possibility that the core problem of the anxiety is still there. Good luck!

Most people take them for anxiety, so it may seem like the withdrawal wont ever go away. Your anxiety will just get a little better over the next 4 to 8 weeks. Thats about how long it took me to withdrawal.

Stopping benzos to fast puts you at risk for seizures.

Most doctors are very willing to work out a taper schedule that will make coming off them easier and much safer.

Take care

Use a taper schedule. Do not go off cold-turkey, ever. I even tried with my antidepressants and it didn't work for me, it was so painful. Best of luck.

yeah.. taper for sure..
my experience has been that doctors say you can come off quicker than you should try... my doc was not so understanding for some reason and just cut it cold turkey saying it would be fine - but he hated me or something...
even though he said that i still used the remaining i had left over to do the best taper i could over a week or so
my big problem was the anxiety because i hate anxiety so much...
but i smoke a little herb and it helps take my mind off 'unpleasentnesses'

sorry you're goin through that...
