I think the deal is, you're always going to get lots of different answers. Because everyone's body responds differently to these medications. Serequel causes cravings and even metabolic changes in a lot of people. However, it obviously doesn't do that to everyone. I've heard of people with serious issues at 50 mg and those only impacted at 600mg. Problems after 6 months and problems only after years. Unfortunately, I don't think we yet have a way to know how it will impact you in advance. (And I've had some other severe side effects, in addition to the weight.) If it's a drug that you have a strong reason to take, just knowing ahead of time some of the things to watch for is probably the best thing you can do.

If I'd been asked to guess, I would never have thought it would cause weight gain in me. I was one of the "lucky ones" and had never had to watch my calorie intake at all previously. At 5'7" I maintained 118-121 pretty naturally. I'm sure some challenges would have come up as I moved into my 40's, but I seriously doubt it would have been suddenly putting on 70 pounds in two years with no major life style changes.
Thanks for this!

I was on depakote and gained 30 pounds in a couple of months. Then I was on seroquel and abilify and many more and I gained a total of 130 pounds. I was actually underweight before meds and I got to be morbidly obese. I got off all those meds. I got off buspar in November and have since been losing weight. I looked up all the meds that cause weight gain so I know if my Pdoc is going to try to put me on anything new. I don't need anything new, I have awful side effects and extreme weight gain issues so I feel better both physically and mentally with as few meds as possible. I take geodon and lamictal for mood stabilizers. They don't cause weight gain but the lamictal is destroying my teeth and giving me dangerous violent night terrors. I would rather deal with that then the weight gain though.

It's amazing how quickly I lost the weight I had gained once I stopped taking quetiapine. Like you, Boz and Equine, I have a high metabolism and have always been quite slim, so going from 120 pounds to 170 was soul-destroying for me. I didn't recognise myself. I didn't fit any of my clothes anymore. I felt more awful about my appearance than I ever had before. The fact that I gained the 50 pounds over three years and then lost it all in six months once I stopped taking quetiapine made it pretty clear that the medication was to blame for the whole thing!

In addition to that it felt like my brain had been replaced by a block of cement, so there was very little benefit in general for me to be on it. Of course it would be a different matter if it had made me able to function again and I had tried every other option available, because in that case the weight gain could have been outweighed (hah!) by the positive effects of the drug. Alas, there were no redeeming factors for me and coming off it was one of the best things I have done for myself.

From a nimble size 8 (UK size) to a 14.... It took me 18 months to put on 3 and a half stone on 200-300mg of the stuff.

I'm weaning off now and it's still a battle to lose weight. I am convinced it has overall changed my metabolism.

First time i took it for almost a year I was only on 50mg a night (started at 25mg) and I didn't gain weight. Think I even managed to lose some.

I started again in December at 25mg and after many dose increases and decreases ended up on 50mg 3x a day. Made me hungry all the time.. I put on weight, not sure how much but I stopped it a couple of months ago for that reason.

I think maybe just taking it at night helped not to gain weight as i was asleep when I was hungriest.

I gain weight on Seroquel. About 50 lbs in 60 months. I lost the weight after I stopped taking it over time. The same thing happened with Abilify.

I am one that has gained about 28-30 pounds on seroquel. I feel like it does something to your metabolism. I would say if anything, try to watch your calorie and carb intake, exercise regularly, and drink lots of water. I think weight gain is inevitable with some people when they take seroquel. I wish you luck.
