After increasing my dose from 150mg once a day to 200mg twice a day, I have had the most horrific migraine attack. Sumatriptan did nothing, which was a first for me. It started very early Saturday morning last weekend and just kept getting worse, and by Monday morning it was so bad I called the GP out of desperation. I was prescribed co-codamol and metoclopramide (anti-nausea), and by the time I was able to take it I'd had a migraine for 60 hours. I started crying a few times because it was just so bad.
![]() The GP mentioned that an increase in lamotrigine can either make migraines better or worse. I have just recovered after the postdrome from hell (it went on for a whole week!), and have just had another attack, this time weirdly on the opposite side of where I usually get it. Luckily this one seems to have responded to sumatriptan, and the drowsiness is kicking in so I'll probably be able to go back to sleep soon. Anyway, I was wondering what other people's experiences with lamotrigine have been when it comes to migraines. Were the effects long-term? Could this just be a phase while I adjust to the higher dose? Do I stick with it and see if it improves, or should I go back to a lower dose as soon as possible?

Well, I'm kind of an outlier because I have a migraine disorder (a very rare one! sporadic hemiplegic migraine), but I take 400mg of lamotrigine (lamictal) at night, and I've never experienced a higher onset of migraines after. If I have them, I just take my fioricet and go to sleep!

I had a total of three migraines last week just after the one that lasted for over a week. I haven't had any so far this week, but I am exhausted. Saw a psychiatrist again at my local mental health team, and we agreed to cut back to 150mg twice a day. In addition my GP told me to go back on propranolol.
I usually have migraines anyway, but normally only once a week, maybe two or three just before and at the beginning of my period, but not always. And I have never experienced one that didn't respond to sumatriptan. It's the first time I've had to take codeine.
