Hi,
I'm having serious difficulty focusing at the moment, - I've decided to try an omega 6 oil supplementation.. as i don't eat fish or anything else that'd provide me with the omega oils.

However, i'm really concerned over: Dioxins and other nasties.
I've heard about an algae based source of omega,,, yet being something that lives in the sea and feeds on it - i would've thought it might have the same problem with pollutants..

Is it worth it?

Can't you get omegas from flax seed or some ****? Does it have to be from fish?

Personally, though, I think it's worth it. I started eating LOTS of fish (5+ meals a week) almost a year ago and I feel bloody fantastic. It's not like I executed a double-blind study or anything, so I guess I don't know for certain if it's the fish or some other things I've tried to do to clean up my life, but I feel strongly that the fish contributed to lots of really positive things.

My point being, I eat a ******** of fish--actual fishies that have been swimming around in toxic filth--and haven't keeled over from pollutants yet, so I'll bet you'll be fine with purified, homogenized, regulated oils.

Good luck.

Why not use seal oil instead? It's much more potent and rarely comes with the contaminants of fish.

Hi, seals are higher in food chain, therefore the concentration of the contaminants are higher, plus it comes from marine mammal, for me personally, the source of these oils and claims of the products are questionable.

To the OP, good luck though, I hope you learn as much as the products out there, and you can't avoid but to do the math.

P.S. While you're searching for the information, you might wanna type in "pharmaceutical grade" ones too, they make those, I had no applicable aliment when I was considering taking Omega-3, things may have changed since the last time I heard about it.

This was my immediate thought, too, re: high on the food chain=higher concentration of mercury and other grossness. Much fish as I eat, I do make some effort to limit the big predators--tuna, swordfish, mackerel.

Then again, I read something kinda neat the other day about how these fish tend also to be high in selenium, which supposedly binds with mercury and keeps you from absorbing it.

Might be a good reason to just add our fishy friends to your diet instead of supplementing with the oil only.

Oh, and for what it's worth, I found fish oil supplements give me fish burps. Pan-seared rainbow trout with a side salad somehow does not.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll do your homework and come to a conclusion that's acceptable to you. Let us know what you decide!

There are very good brands that follow the GMP and state on their bottles that the fish oil has been moleculary distilled to expel contaminates, (PCBs), etc.
Here are some links; That I think are beneficial:

I wonder if the contaminant screened oils are available in the UK (site linked above is US/Canadian).

I have been taking chia seed and flaxseed but as that article states the ALA they contain needs to be converted by the body to the useful EPA and DHA fatty acids, whereas fish oil is direct so a surer bet.

I found this:

You could look at the fish oil and wonder about nasty stuff in it....or you can look at the fact that the caps are gelatin based and made with cow, pig, etc, hooves, snouts and whatnot. What kind of growth hormones and fun stuff they must be fed. We can worry about a lot. The benefits outweigh the issues to me.

That being said I'm a piscatarian (vegetarian that eats fish). My meds work better with fish oil. I take 2 x 1400mg (900mg o3) every morning with meds....I know.....if I take gelatin fish oil caps not within a piscatarian diet. I learned to live with it when I had to take Saphris which has gelatin in it.

I do the best I can and try not to sweat all the small stuff. I know that's not easy when we want to do the best for ourselves and be perfect about it. In my opinion, taking fish oil pollutants is less harmful than what's in gelatin.

I hope that's helpful.
