My pdoc gave me a low dose (0.5mg) of haldol a couple years mainly for a movement disorder. In addition to depression/anxiety I also have mild hallucinations from time to time and "brain chatter". Pdoc figured the haldol might help with that some too. Well, after about 6 weeks or so at the next appointment pdoc asked about the movements, hallucinations, and brain chatter and side effects. I told pdoc that I couldn't tell if there was a decrease in movements, but there was a decrease in the brain chatter/hallucinations, but it made me really tired, so I was only able to take it at night. Pdoc asked if I wanted to keep taking the haldol and I told him no.
Over the past 2 years I took it a few times and pdoc would ask occasionaly if I had been taking any. He also seems to think that these are anxiety/stress related. Last week at the appointment as pdoc was asking me how often/if xyz was worse/better I told him that the "brain chatter"/hallucinations were more than the occasional times they usually occur. Then pdoc asked me if they were bad enough for a new prescription for haldol. I told him no. Why haldol? There are a lot of newish medications, though he isn't one to prescribe new medications just because of advertisements/newness, there are newer ones than haldol without being completely new. Is there something specific about Haldol compared to the others that some of you know about that can be helpful? |

My best guess as to why your psychiatrist wants to stay with Haldol is that it's very effective in controlling motor movement.
I hope this helps. |

I take haldol and like it well enough. I would guess your doc picked haldol because you are tolerating it well. It's tough to find an ap that works so why fix it if it's not broken. Good luck I hope if helps

The thing was I was taking 0.25mg at night before bed and tried 0.5mg at bedtime a few times. It didn't effect the movement disorder. The only side effects were it made me tired/ fall asleep, but it was a really small dose so I'm not sure if it would cause too many side effects.

I didn't have any side effects from taking haldol. I really like that it's an older drug. I feel like it's been tested more and the side effects (if any) are more well known. That is a tiny dose that you were taking. I take 8 Mgs per day. I take 4 in the morning and 4 at night.
