There are other benzos. Another option is low dose Seroquel. My pdoc had me on that for awhile and it worked out well. I still had my klonopin for really bad times, but I could differentiate which situation each called for.

hydroxyzine is an antihistamine that works in a similar way to the benzos but is not habit forming
Thanks for this!

If you look at every single anti- anxiety med it will list fatigue or somnolence (sleepiness) as a potential side effect. Think about the mechanism of action; you're essentially slowing down your brain to stop the anxiety. When things slow down it can make us fatigued. That does not mean everyone will feel those side effects but the potential is there. you don't know until you take it. I recommend that if someone is taking those meds to try the first couple of doses on a day off or weekend, so they know how it affects them
Thanks for this!

I cannot make a specific recommendation for you as I am not your doctor. I don't know your health history. If you want to try an over the counter item, you can talk to your doctor about "natural calm" which is essentially a magnesium supplement. not as potent as medication but some people report it is relaxing for them. it would not be sedating as the medications can be

chlorpromazine? That's an old school antipsychotic. No I do not suspect that would be a good choice for an as needed daytime med, that will probably sedate you even more than a benzo would.

I already answered you. Talk to your doctor as the level of sedation varies by person. This is what you pay your doctor for, that expertise.

I've also been on ativan and xanax. Both made me a lot sleepier than klonopin.

.25 Xanax puts me to sleep. I do fine with hydroxyzine. It varies so widely and there is no way to predict how you will react. In general, I think if anxiety can be controlled without a benzo that is the better way to go. I have heard that benzo withdrawal can be awful.
Thanks for this!

Maybe a beta blocker like propanolol? That lowers your blood pressure a bit and can help with a panic attack. I tried it, but unfortunately got a killer headache the couple times I took it. I know it helps a lot of people though. You need a prescription.

I've found describing my symptoms to pdoc is helpful. He will explain the different med options and together we decide what med I try. He wants me to tell him how I'm feeling and he proceeds based on that.

Of course, he's the doctor so I defer to his expertise but it's nice to be involved. I do let him know about side effects I want to avoid (sedation during the day, weight gain). The next appointment, we discuss how I'm doing on the med. I call him if I have a troubling side effect or question about the med that I need help with prior to the upcoming appt.

In my country policy for anxiety is Oxazepam. I take it as needed and it works fairly well.
