Lithium is next up on my list of options to try for treating my bipolar disorder. Antipsychotics have been helping me since diagnosis but I'm trying to get by on Lamictal and Klonopin currently. It's not going well, I'm cycling rapidly and I am currently in a pretty severe depressive state. My Pdoc is concerned about my thyroid with the lithium. I wasn't aware before that it could be an issue. My GP wants him to try it. He feels it's a safer option for my health. So far, my thyroid functioning has always been normal. I'm adopted and have no family medical history. So, I don't know what things I'm at higher risk for. It complicates decision making. I guess what I'm trying to find out is how common are thyroid problems with lithium? Any advice for my predicament?

I don't know how likely thyroid issues are. I did develop them on lithium (after a sustained toxicity) but it's not big deal, just a pill to take every morning and labs every 6 months or so. I wouldn't make it a factor in deciding just because it's an easy problem. Compared to the weight gain from APs I'd go with needing thyroid meds any day, personally.
