Hi, My pdoc has added Trileptal to my medications. We're hoping the Trileptal will decrease my severe anxiety, which she believes might be a hypomanic symptom. I know everyone is different, but I'm curious about others' experiences with Trileptal. Anyone?

I just took it briefly for facial pain, but it didn't help. It obviously affects the nerves, so I'd think it could help with anxiety.
Thanks for this!

It helped me a bit with anxiety and agitation, but not enough. I still went on an anti psychotic eventually. But it's a good first drug to try for bipolar. I hope it helps you.

Thanks, MP. I'm already on 2 AP's (Latuda, Seroquel). I've already been on 20+ meds over the years, but never tried Trileptal.

I love Trileptal and have been taking it since 2009. It drastically reduced my irritability, anger, rage, etc for me. It evened me out for years and I feel like my body just has to have it now. Any attempt to lower it doesn't go well.
Thanks for this!

Well, just for the record, Trileptal is affecting my sleep in a very weird way. When I try to fall asleep I keep awakening. Every time I try to fall asleep again my brain seems to 'see' strange things...lights, very vivid memories, rumination, and so on. I don't think this is a helpful med for me.

The generic for Trileptal is Oxcarbazepine, right? I only took it for about 45-60 days and got off of it because it was making me retain fluid -- waaaay more than usual. My ankles swelled up huge, and I was filling up in my lungs and wheezing. I'm on Latuda now.

That sounds rather alarming, Seeker. I'm glad you're off the Trileptal. Oh- and yes, the generic is Oxcarbazepine.

I take 60mg/day of Latuda and it's been excellent for me. Brought me out of a miserable depression, which also took the edge off a severe anxiety issue. My challenge now is dealing with the remaining anxiety/rumination/intrusive thoughts.

Okay, so my pdoc (she's wonderful) told me to try taking the Trileptal in the morning instead of at bedtime. I'll give it a try.

300mg. is actually a fairly low dose of Trileptal. I believe the dose can go up to 1200mg./day, with 600mg./day being an actual 'therapeutic dose'.

Taking half my dose in the morning is working much better for me, so far.

Great! Not tired from it?

Im still working on going up slowly. I have to do that with meds bc im sensitive. The goal is 600 for me i believe.

Yeah, my pdoc is raising my dose slowly, too. I had a rash from Lamictal...hopefully that won't happen with Trileptal. I think 600mg is my goal dose, too.

So far the morning dose isn't making me tired. A bit spacey, but it's worth it if I'm less anxious.

I'm at 1800mgs taken at night (max dose is 2400mgs). I was extremely tired all of time too. But eventually being on Wellbutrin has helped balance it out. Good luck with your journeys!
Thanks for this!

Is sleep walking a side effect.
It happened to me last night. Sometimes i sleep walk when stressed. But wanted to rule out this med.
Anyone have that happen to them?

I'm starting up on this med too. Right now only 300 to be going up slowly. I hope we all find good things with this! Keep this thread updated!

Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences on this thread.

BipolarMama31, I don't know if sleepwalking is a side effect. It wouldn't surprise me, though.

As far as I know I haven't had that side effect. It's hard to tell now since I live alone, but when I have lived with others or spent the night at a friends place I was never told that I sleep walk. But I'm curious now since being on the Restoril since sometimes the next day things are not where they should be....

Well i slept walked, and made a sandwhich... i only know because when i woke up and got out of bed, i stepped on it lol. So i was curious if this is normal?

I have crazy sleepwalking stories from when i was younger. It runs in the family i guess? My mom once slept walked into a wall and broke her nose.

I forced myself to take it for 3 weeks , I had nausea every single moment despite taking zofran , I couldn't walk a straight line , wasn't able to drive. Had to toss it in the bin with all the other meds that didn't help or side effects were to much

Yikes, that sounds terrible. So far, I don't have any obvious side effects from the Trileptal. But to tell the truth, my body has been through so many meds, sometimes I wonder if I've just stopped having bad side effects - and stopped having amazingly good effects, too.
Thanks for this!
