So lately I have been experiencing signs that seem like mania, at least according to here. I've been to the doctor and she drastically lowered my meds but I was just wondering if anyone knows if that can happen like after a year or so after taking medication?

Yes, anti-d's can cause mania. They can also cause extreme anxiety. This is especially true if you have bipolar disorder. I'm on an anti-d, but also take a mood stabilizer to help me not become agitated and anxious.

I don't think that antidepressants cause mania. If something happens a year after taking the medicine, I would say that it is unrelated.

It depends on the type of Antidepressant. SSRI are less likely to cause manic episodes, while tricyclics would have a higher likelihood to cause manic episodes.

It also depends on person to person, and the foods and supplements you have been taking.

Your doctor should decide if lowering the dose is the best option over adding a mood stabilizer or an anti-psychotic, which would have more adverse side effects than any antidepressant.

Maybe you would be told to come back in two weeks to tell the results of lowering the dose.

It got worse so I called her and she took me off antidepressants completely and told me to call her tomorrow. I have appointment to see her on Tuesday though, if everything will be normal.

Thanks for help

It is not uncommon for a manic episode to be triggered by anti-depressants. This usually happens in a bipolar person misdiagnosed as Depressed. It is important that an individual as such be also prescribed mood stabilizers.

This is why it is good to see at psychiatrist. Talk to your family doctor about a referral.

It took me awhile but after taking myself off of my antipsychotic and just staying on my SSRI I went full blown manic. I then had to fess-up to my pdoc what I had done and he then put me back on but I had to start from scratch on a low dose and then titrate back up.

As someone with bipolar I disorder I can confirm that it can in fact cause manic episodes. Psychiatrists should generally steer away from antidepressants when treating bipolar disorder, because the risk can be devastating .

I was first on Zoloft about 3 years ago, and had to be quickly taken off of that and put on Lamictal and Risperdal. Then already, there was the suspicion of bipolar disorder. After being taken off of those meds (due to weight gain) I was put on another antidepressant, Lexapro. Again, after a short use, I began displaying symptoms of mania. I was taken off of Lamictal and put on lithium, which I am still using to this day.

While on Lithium, I experienced my first intense manic episode which lead to hospitalization and me being put on Zyprexa, which had some other side effects so I went on Abilify, and finally Seroquel.

Hope this helps x

My first manic episode occurred after I was put on an antidepressant.

I have always been bipolar I would suppose as I always remember having extreme mood swings, but I would never act on my mania 100% because I had crippling anxiety, but when I started SSri's and my anxiety was gone pretty much then I really noticed my mania and started acting on my impulses.
