My doctor added 25 mg twice a day for my compulsive
hair pulling
Has anyone taken this or takes this and can
share your experience?

I took Tofranil, which is in the same family (TCA). Elavil is more sedating than Tofranil. Its considered very effective. Have you asked a pharmacist about the interaction with Prozac? Multiple antidepressants at a time can be trickys, because each drug can increase the blood levels of the other drug(s).

Other than that...there's an old school combo pill, Triavil, that has a low dose of an older, sedating antipsychotic (Triavil/perphenazine) with Elavil, in one pill. Perphenazine is one of the more tolerable older antipsychotic drugs. Its compared well with Zyprexa in head-to-head studies. Triavil is generic and should be cheap. Just a thought.

Yes, multiple antidepressants can be a handful, but assuming your doc is a psychiatrist who understands this and can handle it well, it'll be fine.
(Had a bad experience with a GP trying to get me on antidepressants for anxiety even after strenuous arguing that I am bipolar, on meds for bipolar, and just need something for occasional anxiety.)

From what I can tell after some reading up, Elavil can be quite effective as a medication treating trichotillomania.

It is sort of off-label, but if you think about it, hair pulling is a branch of anxiety disorders, which are often treated with antidepressants.

Just be aware of side effects and contact your doctor if there are any that are alarming or just make you feel uneasy about it.

Also, I would suggest CBT with a therapist, if you aren't already seeing one.

Thanks!
I'm on day 5 of 50mg and I feel a bit nauseous
I'm hoping it helps the Trich as nothing so far has
I know it can take a couple weeks to kick in
The trileptal helps too
I just don't feel comfortable taking 80 Prozac
with Elavil so I went down to 40
Only taking trazodone if I get bad insomnia
But elavil supposed to help with sleep too
It's tough when you're bipolar but also have compulsive rituals

It helps with sleep and with mood - if not for the weight gain, it'd be a terrific med.
