I am 42, and was on zoloft and abilify for the past 5 years. Long story short, my new internal medicine doctor wouldn't prescribe psychiatric rx and it takes 3 months to get a psychiatry appointment here. I ran out of zoloft and haven't taken it for 3 weeks with no issues and no depression. I am only taking Abilify 2mg now.
I was never diagnosed with bipolar but was given abilify to "boost" my zoloft years ago.
My questions are:
1. Is Abilify really helping me if I don't take zoloft and have no depression?
2. Does it make sense to take Abilify as a stand alone if I don't have bipolar or depression?

I tried cutting the abilify in half to wean off but I got super agrivated and pissed off at everyone. Not sure if that means I really need it or if I should just taper slower and in smaller increments.

Thank you for your responses and support in advance.

The point of adding an atypical antipsychotic like Abilify is to 'augment' the effects of the antidepressant, that being Zoloft in this case.

It is not indicated to be used alone for depression, but adjunct to an antidepressant.

Therefore, to answer your question, it would likely not maintain the treatment that was in place while using both Zoloft and Abilify.

I'm glad the Abilify is helping you, and by all means - you can take it alone without another antidep. If it works for you, it works for you.

I'm in a very similar situation with Zoloft and Latuda. I've been on Zoloft for about a year. I really don't think it's doing anything. I have no side effects, but no positive effects, either. The Latuda is definitely helping me, though. So my pdoc is weaning me off the Zoloft, but I will remain on the Latuda.
