hi. Tranquilizers--old and "atypical"--are good for "positive" symptoms, not nearly as effective for "negative" symptoms. Having said that, appropriately dosed "atypicals" are better for anxiety, mood problems, etc., and they don't create as much of a "deficit syndrome" (drug-induced negative symptoms) as the old drugs tend to.
Are negative symptoms a big problem for you? There's very limited data on using modafanil, wellbutrin, and low dose amphetamines for negative symptoms. I don't know many doctors who would go for those in most patients with psychotic disorders, except maybe the Wellbutrin. That's a fairly standard drug for a lot of problems. Prolactin elevation seems to be a problem for a lot of people, as is the case with risperidone and a number of other tranquilizers. With risperidone, there are case reports of adding Abilify to treatment to get the prolactin levels down and also getting the remaining psychiatric symptoms under control. Good luck. |
