I went to see a doctor today to get a referral to talk to a psychiatrist again seeing as it has been a while. When I said I came in to get a referral he kind of scoffed and said 'Do you know how long it takes to see a psychiatrist?' which was kind of uncomfortable. I said I knew it took a long time, but I wanted to get reassessed and go on medication again. He told me he could put me back on a prescription for escitalopram (cipralex) because I have been on it before and when I did take it regularly as directed I saw great improvement in my anxiety, but I noted to him that I have been having more symptoms than what I think of as being just regular depression so I wanted to talk to a psychiatrist.

He asked what I meant by that, and I was kind of uncomfortable because I would rather speak to a psychiatrist about it but I felt like I should give him more information. I told him that I have experienced boughts of substance abuse and alcoholism, points in time where I am impulsive and don't feel like my regular self. I noted I become somewhat hypersexual during these periods and he asked me what that means, and I told him I have had sex with multiple partners somewhat randomly and he gave me a kind of weird look. I told him some other things though as well, but at the end of it I felt like he was displeased with me. He was really short like 'Okay I will send your referral, you can go now.' And I don't know if he was judging me or not?? It made me pretty uncomfortable.

Have you ever had moments where you felt judged by a person of authority or health professional?

Yes, I have certainly had many times when I felt judged by a health professional. I have also had times when I felt like I was the target of a health professional's burn-out.

The doctor you saw sounds ill-informed and like a jerk.

Don't let it bother you, for doctors can be real jerks sometimes. They tend to be moody people in my opinion. Just move on, and talk to your psychiatrist when that time comes.
Good luck

Well you see, some doctors aren't very goo; they have the knowledge, but not the bedside manner.

You know those people who are not great teachers- they have the qualification, but aren't naturals with it? It is precisely like that. Precisely so is the way that some doctors are. Do no worry about it. You need not see that one again.
