Can anyone explain how they withdrew off of an SSRI? For example, I was taking 100mg. For the last two years I have been breaking the end off the pill so I am probably taking about 80mg.

For the past two weeks I have been not taking a pill one day at all, then the next two days will take 50mg. I kind of vary it. If I notice a withdrawal side effect (such as the head zaps, etc.) I will take a pill the next day

So far I am doing fine. but I also think I may be in love, so my brain may be high on that.

I have been wanting to do this for a long time ( I take the pills only so I don't have to deal with withdrawal symptoms and because the people I am around on a constant basic are negative, depressing, and demeaning.

I withdrew off of Zoloft years ago and I remember it was bad! I think sertraline messes with the way you think. it makes you take things you shouldn't take. I am also noticing an increased sex drive even though it is very high to begin with!!.
Does anyone have a plan on how they withdrew? Did your sex drive return? And how long did you take to withdraw?

Hello Engine: I see this is your first post here on PC. So... welcome to PsychCentral! I hope you find the time you spend here to be of benefit.

I don't know as there is a lot I can tell you about withdrawing from an SSRI, although I've done it multiple times over the years. The last time, at my psychiatrist's recommendation, I came off of the maximum dosage of Cymbalta over the course of 3 weeks I think it was (maybe 2... I can't recall for sure.) It seemed like a very quick withdrawal. But that's what my pdoc suggested. So I went with it & it worked out fine.

I do seem to be a person who can withdraw from SSRI's without much difficulty. The main thing I found was that it was important to maintain a steady decreasing pace. That's pretty-much what I know about the process. Hopefully other members will have some better suggestions for you.

Tapering dosage one week at a time for over a month. I still dealt with some brain zaps though. YMMV
