Since getting on Abilify, I have gained nearly 80 lbs. I was a healthy 120-130lbs before I was on it. You do the math. I'm not exactly on the skinny side anymore. Well it's not so much a body image issue, I would like to have some of the weight go away because I feel it may lead to other issues down the road. So, I am looking at options that might be more weight neutral.
I've read that Lamictal is pretty weight neutral, and my pdoc said something to me about Abilify being one of two of the most weight neutral in their classifcation, so maybe Lamictal is the other one? I'm hoping that I can get off of Abilify at any rate and try something else. Obviously not anything like Lithium or Valium. Those will just blow me up to 300 lbs in no time flat. I'm also wanting to try another antidepressant as I feel my body is now resistant to the 300mg of Effexor I'm currently on. That and I don't want to be on quite so high of a dosage. I was looking at maybe trying Prozac again. I had been on it in the past and it worked really well, but then was taken off of it when the symptoms of being depressed subsided. Then I was off of meds completely and the episodes of depression, mood irregularity, and even the episodes disassociation happened. Anyways, what are your thoughts? I am compiling a laundry list of things I want to discuss with my Pdoc next time I see them and this is one of them.

I have been on all the stuff you are corrently on at one point or another, if any of them changed my weight it wasn't enough to notice. However Latuda but about 80lbs in 6 months on me. The doctors have tried a few appetite suppressants but it is really that my metabolism is crawling and not that I am overeating, at least anymore. That being said I have had 4 different doctors all think it was better to keep me on Latuda, even with the added weight, because it works with almost no other side effect. I guess I am a little more vain than you but the change in my physical appearance does bother me, I went from a size 6 (I am tall) to a plus 18-20. It is just working so consistently though.

I don't think lamictal and abilify are the same classification. Lamictal is an anticonvulsant/mood stabiliser, abilify is an atypcial antipsychotic.

Latuda has been weight neutral for me. In fact I've been able to lose 20 lbs of the zyprexa weight. It is an antipsychotic like Abilify. I also take lamictal as a mood stabilizer and haven't had any side effects.

First question how tall are you?
I'm on abilify and have never gained an inch, but that's my body! Valium is an anti anxiety med Lithium I believe is a mood stabilizer I believe lamcital is mood stabilizer as well Effexor is the worst med I ever withdrew from Prozac is okay but I found that celexa worked better!

I am on Geodon and that's pretty weight neutral. I am also on Lamictal, Ativan, and propalanol. All of which are weight neutral. I ended up losing 75 of the 132 pounds I gained on psych meds. I have 16 more pounds to go to get to a normal 145 pounds .
I had major self esteem issues with my weight. So meds that caused weight gain just didn't work. Last edited by Mountaindewed; Aug 27, 2017 at 10:38 AM. |
