Has anyone had any luck with losing weight while taking Remeron (mirtazipine)? I have gained 30 lbs and am not a healthy weight and feel uncomfortable and self conscious. I am starting to be more active but it is so hard to control my diet because I am hungry literally ALL THE TIME. I've been on Remeron almost a year now and it's absolutely necessary for me to get any sleep, so switching isn't really an option (only took 20 years to get someone to figure out my insomnia!) I have tried all sorts of things to help me lose a few lbs, but I'm starting to think it is literally impossible.

When I was taking mirtazapine, all I could think of was eat and sleep. I managed to keep my weightgain down by eating (way more) healthy. Small meals except dinner, and a lot of fruit - always within reach, so it was easier to grab an apple than going to the fridge. I probably wouldn't have gained weight if I had exercised at the same time.

Goodness, no! I gained lots of weight in a hurry with Remeron. It's bad for that. Maybe, ask your doctor, but I'd think that would be a "losing" battle.

What dose are you on? The higher the dose the less the weight gain/sedation. I gained at 30 mg but at 45 and later 60 mg had no problems and it was still very effective for my depression.

I stopped taking it years ago, thank goodness. I'm sorry, but I don't remember how much I was on.

higher doses tend to cause less weight gain. sometimes, remeron is used with an additional antidepressant. effexor seems to be popular ("California Rocket Fuel"), and wellbutrin seems to be a fairly common add-on, too. Adding an additional drug might help w/ mood, anxiety, etc. and also help the weight situation.
Thanks for this!
