It also means it's non addictive. That is not always true though even though its non narcotic.

It means that it is not a class of the opiate family.
It is a sedative-hypnotic. And be aware, sedative-hypnotics DO have some similar risks as the opiates: respiratory depression, dependance, addiction. Not to worry you....so it's technically true that it's not a narcotic but it IS a "controlled substance" |

i wondered that, too. i guess they're trying to make it seem as safe and un-addictive as possible? Its in Schedule IV of the controlled substance set up, same as the benzodiazepines. One can get a limited number of refills on each prescription, etc. I would think dependence could be an issue with any 'z' hypnotic, but hopefully not as big a problem as one sees with long term benzodiazepine use.

I think they don't have the right to say its non addictive, because it can be, so they say non narcotic so people will think it means non addictive even if those two aren't the same.
IMO, advertising prescription drugs is unethical.

Non-narcotic in the most simple sense means that it is not a substance that has a painkiller effect.. Non-narcotic can mean that it is not a substances that causes drowsiness or unconsciousness. Also, one could say it isn't a substance that directly effects behavior or is addictive.
