I started taking a ssri and just after one pill I noticed a difference.

Is this a good sign?

What side effects are to come?

I'm sure you already know this, but keep in mind no two people's experiences are exactly the same. I'll tell you my experience with antidepressants.

I've tried two SSRI's. One worked better than the other, but they both started out with a noticeable difference on day one. I felt better, with no side effects.

After a few days, I kind of felt like they stopped working, which discouraged me. But after four weeks, I started feeling better again. Again, I can't tell you for sure what it means for you, but I did feel noticeably different for the first few days.

For both types, I started noticing side effects after about a week or two. Neither got really bad, and my second type (which I'm on currently), is pretty manageable. For me, both SSRI's caused some excessive sweating, increased hunger, sleepiness, and jaw clenching. Again, they aren't bad, but these are commonly reported side effects.

(edit: I also should add that I don't feel like my meds have "given me my life back", as some reviewers say on various drug sites. They get me through my day, though, thankfully.)

That's just my experience. I hope yours works for you!

Thank you for your well put answer.

If it takes the edge off and calms me when I need it then hopefully that will outweigh side effects.

In the land of unicorns there would be no side effects but then would we even take it in the first place?

I have been on 2 SSRIs and though effective in managing some symptoms, it brought on other symptoms and I had to stop each them soon thereafter.

This class of medication is very useful for both anxiety disorders and depression. Yes, I cannot take them, but I am glad that you are finding your medication helpful.

As for the question of which side effects are to come- I can guarantee that there is a whole list of side effects. With that being said, it is usually only one or two side effects affecting a patient (if any)

Antidepressants generally take 4~6 weeks to become fully effective and 6 ~ 8 weeks to reach steady state blood levels. Some people report improvement in the first 2 weeks but earlier than that is probably a *placebo effect*.
Drowsiness, headache, and nausea are some of the most common side effects and the good news is that they usually only last a few days to a week or so, getting better every day. Only a very small percentage of users experience side effects and they rarely warrant stopping the medication.

Having an immediate effect is usually part of med induced hypomania/mania.
