37.5 mg in the morning and 75 in the afternoon. after only one day, i was extremely nauseous and woke up feeling like zombie. i'm really scared to take today's dose, and have not done so yet. The physical trauma from the medication is making me second guess if I really need it, because my depression is more mild. Any advice? My psych is not picking up her phone right now.

hi. most antidepressants are helpful in severe depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. with milder depression, you start running into fewer benefits, plus you have to deal with costs and adverse effects.

that's kind of a high starting dose, i think. when i briefly tried effexor, it was 37.5mgs daily for a week or so, then up to 75, then up to...i forget. point is, it sounds like your doctor is rapidly increasing the dose. if you were severely depressed, maybe that'd be an OK move, but if its relatively mild/moderate depression...I dunno.

psychiatrists are often not the best at keeping up with their patients. i dont know what that's about, honestly. im not trying to scare you or sound like a bitter patient, its just...not so great care seems to be the new "standard of care." maybe its always been that way?

effexor is more ssri at lower doses, then it turns more into an ssnri, then at very high doses it does something to dopamine. lethargy and apathy are fairly common with effexor. people who get severe, agitated depression benefit from that, for a while. tapering effexor after long term treatment is often difficult.

again, im not trying to scare you or anything. i just dont like seeing drugs foisted on people w/o informed consent. not good, but its all too common.

i hope things get better for you.

Nausea and lethargy are common when first starting effexor. It does get better though it may take a week or two for your body to adjust.

"Very common (10% or more): Nausea (up to 35%), dry mouth ( up to 17%)"

The good news is that these side effects resolve after a few days to a week or so. Try soda crackers, milk, ginger ale, etc.
When you do speak with your pdoc ask about starting on a lower dose until your metabolism adjusts.
