My psychiatrist increased my Lamictal from 300 mg to 450 mg a few months ago. My manic episodes have been very few, but when I'm in a manic phase, it's not good. I ususally cycle towards depression, those deep dark places where you can't even get out of bed. To help me avoid these epsodes, she increased the Lamictal. So now, I'm starting to cycle toward mania. Is this just a coincidence? Or can too much Lamictal actually be an activating drug? Thanks, all.

Hello, NolaMae, and welcome to Psych Central! I wouldn't think so, since it's more of a mood stabilizer and not an antidepressant.

Lamictal was not effective for me but I will say with mood stabilzers, I find if I was not on a med at the time of starting the stabilizer, I tend to rebound out of depression for a few days to a week into hypomanic symptoms. I consider it the natural reaction of something pulling me out of my typical depression and after a little time it evens out.

Lamictal works as a mood stabilizer for bipolar, though it's not as strong at controlling mania. I don't think I would depend on it alone to prevent manic episodes. I mean alone as in you don't seem to be on any other mood stabilizer. On the other hand I've never heard of it causing mania. The dose you're taking is pretty high, closer to what would be used to prevent epileptic seizures.

Lamictal is no really known to do that. It just does not possess that property. Antidepressants, however, are known to have that effect on certain individuals.

NoLaMae, I do know that too much Lamictal (over 200mg) causes me to be extremely manic. My OCD symptoms skyrocket, I begin to talk faster than a speeding bullet, and I become a sex maniac. It also caused me to work out at the gym 5 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Try to consider another option that works best for you. Best of luck.

Anything has the potential to set off some mania, unfortunately.

Have you had any other changes or stresses? If not I would maybe ring the doctor and see what s/he thinks.

I've never heard of lamictal being activating, if anything it has the opposite effect on me. I quit taking it cause it flattens me out and I can't feel.
