I have been prescribed a generic of Xanax.

I do find this particular generic (which I have used before) rather minimal in the effects that it has when compared to the equivalent I used before, which worked wonders.

I suggested Rivotril first, which she then agreed to. (Rivotril = Klonopin)
She then wrote up a prescription for this generic of Xanax in any case. Oh well.

My question is- can I ask the pharmacist for a the brand of alprazolam (Xanax) when the prescription has a generic equivalent listed?

I do not feel like rocking up at the pharmacy, asking for the brand (which should be allowed to be given because it is 'equivalent') and then be told otherwise and look like a fool.

i do not know how it is where you live, but here...one can request brand, but you may end up having to self-pay.

Same around here (Europe). There has to be a medical reason behind you needing the brand name drug, or else you'll have to pay it yourself or cover the difference.

Update on the situation:

Turns out one can just ask for the brand, or even a different generic. They do warn that the price is more... but are more than willing. (or at least the lady that helped me was)

*Generic substitution* just means that a generic CAN be substituted...not that it HAS to be. Usually a matter of choice based on $$$ and efficacy.
Surprisingly..or not surprisingly...generics can work better than the brand for some people...just a matter of how the inert ingredients affect absorption.

Not that much more over here. Insurance covered most of it in any case. Just a small copayment.
