Thanks for letting me join. I have anxiety and depression. My biggest problem right now is taking an AD antidepressant that won't cause me severe nausea. I have tried several AD's prescribed by my shrink. So far, each of them has caused severe nausea. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can offer advice as to what worked for them because they had the same problem. If this is not the proper location to post this question, please tell me where I should post the question.

Hi Dziadzi ,

How are you really doing ? , OK__ I am not a doctor , however if your depression is light to moderate I would suggest talking with your doctor about Elavil or the generic amitriptyline.

It should not cause nausea , but might make you feel a little loopy at first , not to worry , that part goes away in about a week.

Depending on your age / weight = BMI and exactly what you are struggling with , 25mg`s 3 times per day with a reduction of 2 per day in 4 to 6 weeks would be my suggestion.

After a month and a half see how you are feeling , how is your depression better or worst , but keep in mind , that is where your depression is , so don`t just look to the body.

If you don`t already , because of your depression , go for a walk , listen to the sounds around you , ask yourself " how do I feel" , then reply that info to your doctor.

Elavil should not make you feel sick , the first few days you might sleep more than you have been , that is because your body wants to take a break.

It is a safe drug and has been used for decades , with much success , but don`t give up on it , take as prescribed ( if prescribed ).

But the most important thing is what you have done already , coming here , and we welcome you.

Here no one is alone .

Keyplayer.

Sipping ginger ale or ginger candy can really help with nausea.

All SSRIs caused me some nausea but on a scale I'd say Venlafaxine was by far the worst and Citalopram the most tolerable

Eventually I went for Mirtazapine - this didn't cause any nausea (although I since came off it after a few years as it wasn't really helping my mood - except indirectly by helping my sleep - and caused weight gain)

The antidepressant that causes the least side effects is probably Agomelatine but it's hard to get hold of

Venlafaxine put my heart rate up . It made my pulse quicken. So I would avoid. I still take mirtazapine. I don't get drowsy but after ten years on first olanzapine then quetiapine, that's no wonder.

Welcome to PC! I hope you find your time here to be of value Now while SSRIs never made me nauseous, they do make me very irritable. I will be switching to a different type of antidepressant, but I do not know if you have that option or not. Best of luck

I was looking up agomelatine because I'd never heard of it, and nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain are listed as common side effects. So not sure if agomelatine is the go-to med for those suspectible to 'stomach side effects'.

I never had them and I'm susceptible to SSRIs causing this - the mechanism is very different and it's closer to melatonin chemically.
