I've found that when I started the 36 mg of Concerta, my mood raises up to a hypomanic stage. I have been diagnosed with bipolar 1 so, I know mania isn't that far from it.

The thing is, I do get all silly, perhaps a little more pedantic at most, but nothing further that that; it lasts for as long as the medication is in my system.

I am guilty of at times stopping my lithium to have a more clear thought process, drugging it down with lithium and a tranquilizer (usually alprazolam) when things start racing.

However, I am still taking my medication while on this, and I truly get work done. I have important tests soon So I can't go down the road of fogginess and lack of any focus.

Hi. That's not a crazy high dose, but some people are more prone to stimulant-induced euphoria (and hypomania, mania, psychosis, etc.) than others. Please just do be careful. methylphenidate can brighten mood and help focus w/o causing as many problems as the amphetamines, so...that's a definite plus.

Have you tried an anti-seizure drug instead of lithium? Just a thought. I live in the US, and my experience has been that lithium has been moved to 2nd line, or at least that's how it is with the shrinks I've seen. I take Trileptal, and its been good to me.

@still_crazy Yeah I have tried Lamictal. I think it was of some help, but we had to add Risperdal.

It was a brief treatment but I soon had to be put on lithium, which works well.

36 mg is the second highest for Concerta. (18, 27, 36, 54) but yeah, we agreed that 54 may be a risky choice.

When did you start 36mg?

Even non-bipolar people can get euphoria when they first start a stimulant or shortly after increasing their dose. Then the euphoria lasts as long as the drug is in their system.

Eventually, they stop getting this euphoria after a few days or a few weeks, ish.

But it's possible you do get hypomania. Whenever I take Adderall XR, I do get hypomania.

@bluebicycle I started with 18 mg in Feb, then 27 in March, each helping slightly more than one step lower, so it is not like I have not used a stimulant before, though it is a bit better today than yesterday.
