I was on buspar and I ate a grapefruit. I realized a few hours later that it interfered with the med. I was totally fine but I was worried that something would happen.
I’m trying to eat healthy/ lose weight. I know grapefruit can help with weight loss. I haven’t checked my meds, but I read on a crash diet horror story site that grapefruit can cause blood clots in people who take birth controls. I called my primary doctor. She didnt really answer my question if it caused an interaction with my Seasonal, she just said “a grapefruit every now and then is ok.” I’m just wondering, what actually happens when you eat grapefruit while on certain medications? Does the med just not work as well? Or can something really dangerous happen? |

Yeah, you aren't suppose to eat grapefruit on psychotropic meds. It makes the meds less effective.

Checkout the FDA's article on Grapefruit. They've got a boatload of information there:
https://www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/Con.../ucm292276.htm Please, ask another professional about grapefruit. It is extremely dangerous to take it with meds (according to the FDA), so I'm questioning the whole "grapefruit every now and then is ok" argument. I'm not a doctor of course, but at the same time, the FDA is a government agency that has strict guidelines for the pharmaceutical and medical industries. I don't know if you're in the U.S. or not, but doctors here are REQUIRED to comply with the FDA. |

Grapefruit changes some aspects of liver function, which changes the amount of active drug in your system from a given dose, for some drugs.
