I just started lactating about 2 days ago .. it's the weirdest side effect I've had in a longgg time!! I'm thinking it's the Risperdal or the Seroquel I just started taking in the beginning of January. The Seroquel I only take as needed but I take Risperdal 2x a day .. so I'm leaning more towards the Risperdal. I will be contacting my pdoc in the morning to let him know what's going on.

How long until it will it go away once I stop the Risperdal? I'm still having regular cycles and everything seems to be okay besides the lactation.

That's not good. It's common with Risperdal & means your prolactin levels are being screwed with. Years ago I was prescribed Risperdal and began lactating on it. Pdoc said stop the med immediately. I know some pdocs suggest just going with it until the lactation stops (if it does), but I don't think that's healthy or wise. And I'm a strong believer in psych meds.

As I recall, when I stopped the Risperdal the lactation ceased almost right away.
Thanks for this!

Yup, it's the risperidal. I had the same thing happen, about 3 weeks after I started taking it. I decided to stay on the med, because it was really helping me, and it did eventually stop. Risperidone also completely messed up my menstrual cycle, effectively stopping it for months at a time.

Yep, me too. I saw my doctor about it and he said that I didn't need to worry. It stopped after about 3 months.

i think most of the newer antipsychotics are better w/ prolactin than risperidone. have you tried abilify? there's some add on meds that could allow for ongoing risperidone but get the prolactin levels down.

sorry about this.

I've tried Abilify but it did nothing for me .. it was useless no matter which dosage I was on. I can't take Geodon because of severe EPS issues when I'm on it.. it's looking like I'm going to have to try something else

hi. i read a case study...people on ongoing risperidone had elevated prolactin. instead of switching to abilify, the doctor added a bit of abilify to the risperidone. the prolactin levels came down. i don't know if there were any benefits in terms of psychiatric asessment or whatever, but there weren't any major problems, either.
