thinking about my last post.... are there any antidepressants that help with weight loss? I take a low dose of buproprion but it hasnt cause weight loss. my doctor mentioned putting me on a higher dose for my depression.

I don't know if there are any that help you lose weight, but there are some that don't have weight gain as a side effect. I think Wellbutrin doesn't usually cause weight gain or sexual side effects. But check with your doctor.

I am on topamax that helps control my appetite. It also helps with my moods too. I take 50 in the morning and 50 milligrams at night. The only issue I have with it is sometimes I get painful pins and needles in my feet and cramps in my legs. I also cannot drink soda because the topamax just causes soda to taste very flat. I’ve been craving a coke so badly but every time I’ve tried drinking one it’s just been repulsive.

I have had trouble with doctors prescribing topamax though. Usually the same that don’t prescribe benzos. And if they do they usually just do 50 once a day. But 100 works best. It works really well for moods too. Not just for hunger. Luckily I have found an amazing doctor that will prescribe both benzos and topamax twice a day.

I think it depends on what else you're taking and your doctor's approach. wellbutrin can help, a bit. when i was on 400mgs/daily, i dropped a little bit of weight, despite ongoing treatment w/ an 'atypical.'

some people on clozapine, olanzapine, etc. are prescribed metformin. its a now generic drug for diabetes type II that helps reduce weight gain, can help facilitate weight loss, etc. i asked a psych about it, once, and she told me that id need to talk to the family doctor and also that the drug i was on probably wouldn't cause that much weight gain (i was trying to think ahead...). so, it really depends, i guess.

although there's still -serious- stigma attached to them, there are a number of stimulant-type diet drugs on the market, basically holdovers from decades past when that was a-OK. phentermine seems to be the really popular one. Bontril helped an acquaintance, but I think its regarded as more "addictive" or whatever. I don't know. they're controlled substances, so..there's that. i had another acquaintance who was on seroquel, going to a "well-regarded" psych, she kept whining about stuff...lo and behold, the psych added Adderall for some kind of "ADD/ADHD." LOL.

sorry about your situation. psych drugs can be rough going. :-(
