I can't take any of the SSRI's (cause ocd and ptsd to go beserk) and many of the others can cause more liver damage to someone with cirrhosis like I have.
I have starting doing things to improve my mood like listening to a variety of music, cleaning, reading. I don't know if there are any other antidepressants or mood elevators that may help me. I am on Gabapentin for nerve pain and it helps my mood a bit. Have tried Lamactil and got hives from it so it's out. __________________ One way to get the best out of life is to think of it as an adventure. Have you tried Emsam? It's an MAOI so there are some restrictions but t is a patch so doesn't pass through your digestive system and so it's easier on your organs. It's also really effective in my experience (9 years and still doing well on it).

I might ask my psychiatrist for something other than an SSRI (Because they give me panic attacks and kill my focus).
I'll let you know what she recommends. |

Wellbutrin is an SNRI that worked well for me. I used the xl version (there are several types). I have PTSD also. The other nice thing about wellbutrin is that I found it not at all difficult to get off of when the time was right.

Just found this on the research:
"Antidepressant-induced hepatotoxicity. ... Classical antidepressants such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) seem to have the highest potential to induce liver damage compared with the newer drugs such as selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs)." And basically from my prior research that is what I was saying in my first post. Thanks you for all of your ideas. I'm not really doing too bad without an antidepressant right now today. I get some real low points at times but maybe I can make it through them as I used to when I didn't take antidepressants before. I'm getting better at self-talk and getting through the negative thoughts I have with depression. Thanks again everyone. __________________ One way to get the best out of life is to think of it as an adventure. I know some doctors use stimulants in treatment resistant depression.

Thank you to you all! I had tried them all including Remeron. Made me extremely sedated all the time and ate so much and gained weight. Have an eating disorder, too, so all in all that one's not too good for me.
I have been taking Gabapentin for nerve pain but it also is helping my mood somewhat so that's a plus. I will stick with it and tell my new psychiatric np how Gabapentin has been helping some and see what he says. Music has been a great antidepressant for me and I highly recommend it. Also cleaning and organizing my apt. helps me feel better as I don't feel like a slob anymore...lol __________________ One way to get the best out of life is to think of it as an adventure. Have you talked about it with a psychopharmacologist or an experienced psychiatrist?
There are some meds that can induce liver issues but that they are not more likely to cause them on people who already have some liver problems (like tianeptine that can be taken by alcoholics who had developed liver dysfunction even if tianeptine by itself can cause liver failure). Other meds are metabolized a lot by the liver so if your liver functions less than normal, it can be fixed by taken a lower dose. Tricylic antidepressants damage yout heart when OD, on standard dosage they are not that dangerous. AP can cause heart probelms too (they prolonge QT interval and it may end up causing an arrhythmia). Cardiovascular effects of therapeutic doses of tricyclic antidepressants. A review. - PubMed - NCBI It's much more complex than a list of side effects... __________________ Crazy, inside and aside Meds: bye bye meds CPTSD and some sort of depression and weird perceptions "Outwardly: dumbly, I shamble about, a thing that could never have been known as human, a
thing whose shape is so alien a travesty that humanity becomes more obscene for the vague resemblance." I have no mouth and I must scream -Harlan Ellison- |

I told my psychiatric np that Gabapentin is helping me. My GP internist prescribed it for nerve pain last nov. So my pnp prescribed it for me on fri because I was out of refills. With the low dose of risperdal I'm taking, together they (ris. and gab.) are addressing and helping all my depression and anxiety problems. I feel relaxed, calm and pretty upbeat. Plus the Gabapentin does not stifle my emotions like antidepressants did to me. Not sayin they do that to everyone. It was my experience.
