I am running out of ideas on how to get some sleep. I've tried some different medications but they didn't work. Does anyone have any medications that keep them asleep at night?

i'm 71 yr. old female and this last year has been horrid regarding sleep meds; ambien does little or nothing; zzzzquil helped a little; hydroxyzine combined with xanax landed me in the hospital (passed out going to bathroom and don't know what i ran into but entire area from nose to lip required plastic surgery; but finally i think i've found the solution: 1/2 or whole 25mg. seroquel, plus 5mg melatonin plus 15 mg. temezapam; seroquel seems to win out the most when i've combined it with xanax, but the 3some seems to work 97% of the time if you don't mind the drug hangover in the morning for about an hr. i'm retired so the hangover doesn't bother me and after quietly reading internet with a cup of coffee i'm ready for my workout. good luck. would love to hear if others have found the magic pill for insomnia.

I take a small dose of seroquel to help me sleep at night. It works great, but I wouldn't outright recommend it unless you've already tried all the natural solutions and obvious tips (not looking at a bright screen right before trying to sleep, for example)

I second the seroquel if you’ve ruled out all other options

I am also have treatment resistant insomnia tried everything under the sun. My next step is at my next pdoc appointment we are going to try thorazine. I am getting to sleep now but I am taking a benzo bomb to do it. Right now I take 30mg of temazepam, 2mg of klonopin, 50mg of doxepin and 200mg of seroquel to get to sleep and I only sleep three to five hours crazy huh?

hi. low dose thorazine, seroquel, temazepam. i saw that some doctors cautiously prescribe barbiturates, when all else has failed. probably not a good long term solution, unless nothing else works -ever-.
hope you can get some rest. |

I have a serious problem with sleep too.
Here's the OTC stuff that I use: melatonin 10 mg, magnesium 400 mg and valerian root capsules 3 of them. My prescription amitriptyline 60 mg helps more than anything. Plus I take hydrocodone 10 mg.and Baclofen 20 mg. Also I throw down about 6 oz of white wine with dinner at about 7:30 p.m. I'm not saying it's smart to be taking all that stuff on top of each other. But one gets desperate. As you know by now, having no reliable sleep/wake cycle can make a mess of your life. I'm supposed to see a psychiatrist in April to ask if there is a better pharmacological solution. I don't have a lot of hope I'll get any help. They tell you to "practice good sleep hygiene." I'm planning to ask for a stimulant to take in the morning. Anti-convulsants and anti-psychotics are often prescribed for sleep. They certainly can sedate you. I wouldn't take them long-term though. I think Benzodiazepines in low dosage can be worthwhile. Then there are newer prescription sleep meds. The ultimate sleep meds are barbiturates. (That's supposedly how Marilyn Moroe put herself to sleep permanently.) I didn't think doctors were even willing to order them anymore . . . or were even allowed to. (For very good reason.) But I guess, in some rare situations, they may. This is the class of drug used to euthanize pets. Benzodiazepines are considered pretty safe, if you don't wash them down with alcohol. But be prepared for withdrawal if you stop them suddenly, after getting used to them. Last edited by Rose76; Mar 30, 2018 at 11:45 PM. |

Quote:
Last year I was taking 600mg of Seroquel, 20mg tabs of Ambien, 1mg Xanax and 150mg of Trazadone nightly (and other ‘non-drowsy’ meds). I slept well but then I started ‘sleep-walking’ and began to have sudden blood pressure drops, causing me to become unconscious and fall out of my wheelchair. I stopped the Ambien. You probably don’t need 600mg of Seroquel in the evening. Or Ambien or Xanax. But Trazadone is well known as an insomniac’s friend. Have you tried it?

Klonopin used to help by itself (i was put on it for myoclonic seizures in my sleep) but at some point other things had to be added. Right now 40 mg Doxepin is helping my sleep and mood (which I'm increasing to 50 mg tonight). I also take Geodon at night, so that may be helping me sleep too, but I wouldn't recommend it just for insomnia; I take it to boost my mood and b/c I have depression with "bipolar features". Before Doxepin, Remeron was helping (but caused a lot of weight gain). I couldn't tolerate Seroquel; made me feel like I was in a fog that never lifted.
