Hey All😀
So I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD and Bipolar symptoms. Stimulants caused mania for me so I’m feeling like I need to get the bipolar symptoms in check first ...

Anyone here have both of these disorders and what meds have worked the best for you?

Antipsychotics are a No since they make my adhd worse but I was thinking about talking to my Dic about lithium and Wellbutrin.
Not really sure what to do ?

Dear starseed0626,

I am so sorry you have been afflicted with both ADHD and Bipolar symptoms. What a heavy burden to carry! I do not have first hand experience with those illnesses, so I hope the members here who do will see your post and respond to it with helpful words! Best to you!

Sincerely yours, Yao Wen

Lithium is a salt and therefore it damages the kidneys and liver. It can also damage the thyroid. It's an old drug now. There are newer medications that would be a better fit.

I have BPII and ADHD and had to get the BP under control first. IMO BP people do well if not better on SNRI's or Tricyclics than SSRI's. Wellbutrin is a tricyclic and is also used off label for adhd when stimulants are not tolerated. But I found it very agitating. I also believe that nearly all BP people need a mood stablizer which is sometimes an antipsy. Lamictal is a good mood stabilizer and geodon is a good antipsy for me that is relatively weight neutral. I have never had mania with the adderall I take but like I said I was stable on the other meds first. But that doesnt mean a stimulant is off the table for you forever.

Wellbutrin helps me with my ADHD. My focus is definitely better.

I also have both bipolar and ADHD. The best thing for my bipolar is Vraylar (which is an atypical antipsychotic, but for me had never had any side effects at all). I also take wellbutrin and clonodine to help with the ADHD, and just switched from Adderall to Vyvanse (both stimulants), because stimulants don't have any bad effects on me with my bipolar in check. Wellbutrin helps my ADHD a tiny bit, but I need stimulants for me to notice a big difference.

I am not an authority nor do I have any medical qualifications; I've just been to therapy and clinics and sites. I personally take an anti-convulsant, clonazepam. I also take lamotrigine another drug for epilepsy. I know they are used for calming( (muscles, anxiety). I was initially prescribed them for epileptic twitches at night. I'm bi-polar and I assume it helps with mania. I was on them before I was bi-polar. I was on epival which gave me mania and ... bad symptoms. It, specifically as a mood stabilizer, isn't good for people with bi-polar. I'm currently having my medication changed. I was told "no"lithium that is for major depression. My sister took lithium; mental health issues are in my family. I can't handle anti-psychotics, at all. This is only what I know about me and medication.
