I'd like to hear people's experiences with anti-depressants. What the medication was, what the dosage was, what the effects were, did it continue to work long-term? Etc.
I'm probably about to be going back to the psychiatrist after years because lockdown depression hit me like a truck. He tries to ask for my input in if there's any specific treatment route I'm interested in but I don't know hardly anything about the options other than what the main brand names are. When I try to google around many of the resources talking about anti-depressants end up being filled with anti-psychiatry propaganda which isn't helpful at all. __________________ "Throwing a line out to the sea to see if I can catch a dream" -Ryan Ross Current Diagnoses: Persistent Depressive Disorder (dysthymia), Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder. |

Zoloft treated my OCD and anxiety very well with little side effect. However; it increased my irritability. So I switched to a prescribed strain of MM.

I have been on some form of anti depressant for years. Pretty much tried them all. 40mg of Aropax for many years. I felt so good that I stopped taking them. I kinda hit the deck about 8 months later. Then it stopped working. Sinequan was the very first one. That didnt work. Honestly I have been on so many medications that I cant remember all the names. I am currently on 60mg of Lovan which is okay at the moment.
There are so many anti depressants on the market. Many of them have side effects that may or may not affect you. There is only one way to find out what works for you is to see what the doctor prescribes you. You do not need to limit yourself to medications. There is CBT therapy or TMS (Transcranial Magentic Stimulation). DBT is also a therapy that kind of gives CBT a practical framework. Real life Skills. Good Luck. |

I've been on Venlafaxine for close to 25 years and it worked great for pulling me out of a severe depressive episode and is mostly still working. Worst side effects are problems regulating my body temperature - I over heat.
I'm also on celexa long term. It seems to be working, but it does have a side effect of causing heart problems, so may not be your first choice. splitimage |

I have quite literally been on every AD there is, except maoi's. When I was younger the SSRI class worked well for me. It began with Prozac, then every time a new SSRI would become available my pdoc would prescribe it to me. Then the SNRI's, which I never found too helpful. But the really old AD's had horrible side effects, such as causing my heart to race when I was lying down. The problem, though, was that I have bipolar disorder and wasn't always prescribed a mood stabilizer. So while the AD's would help to alleviate depression, they didn't do a thing to help mania.
After many years, the SSRI's completely stopped working. I tried every one of them - nothing. Then tried the SNRI's. No results. I was getting desperate and was heading toward ECT. My pdoc suggested that we try one more AD before going for ECT. So she prescribed desvenlafaxine (Pristiq). It is an SNRI, but for whatever reason it was like a miracle for me. Within a few days my depression had lifted. The initial dose was 75mg. This winter we've had to increase it to 100mg., but it's still helping. I'm sorry, I don't remember all the various dosages of the meds, except the one I'm on now. They all have side effects, no way around that. But I find that most psych meds do such things as cause "heat waves", which is when my body overheats for a minute, on a regular basis. It's very uncomfortable and annoying. Anyway, I encourage you to try an AD and stop suffering with depression. And those anti-psychiatry sites, etc. anger me to no end. __________________ |

cymbalta saved my life along with mood stabilizers. Antecdotally I find that people with Bipolar do well on SNRI's as opposed to SSRI's or tricylclics.

Prozac, lexapro, and trazodone made me manic. Amoxapine gave me temporary heart issues. Pristiq gave me bad headaches, effexor did nothing, remeron made me hungry. None of them actually helped, but I have schizoaffective bipolar type so not something really meant for antidepressants.
