My pdoc has prescribed Gabapentin for anxiety. I'm curious to know if anyone else here has had experience with it?

My husband was prescribed it for post surgical pain after shoulder replacement last summer. He only took it for short period of time. Then he just took regular over the counter stuff like Tylenol. I think gabapentin was supposed to help with sleep too when dealing with pain. I didn’t know it could be for anxiety too. I don’t think it did anything in terms of anxiety as he was quite anxious worrying of not being able to heal right and work his job. But then he wasn’t on it long enough to take effect.

I'm taking it currently as an anti-craving medication for alcohol (off label use) and find it also helps with my anxiety. My addictions Dr. ofter prescribes it for anxiety to her patients.

Good luck with it.

I usually take 300 mg about 30-60 minutes before bedtime. It works a little bit like Xanax for me--which I only occasionally take (.25 mg about twice a week). My psychiatrist says it is very safe. When I have been taking it a while and then stop taking it (I am afraid I have always experimented with discontinuing my medications so much that I have a lot of antidotal experience with what my meds do for me), I do not sleep well (I sleep for a shorter amount of time) for about 2 nights but it is much easier to get off of than a benzo if you ever want to. It would not be safe for me to take it when driving, etc. because it usually makes me sleepy. When I had more anxiety, it helped with that but now that my anxiety is better, I am just using it to ensure I get 7 hours of sleep verses 5 hours. I have been sleeping very well for a while due to lifestyle (walking, working but not overworking), attitude and my meds. Hope it helps you too!

I used to take it three times a day for anxiety. All it did was make me sleepy

Why not pregabalin, it's older brother and more effective for me.
Again just something to ask your pdoc.
Sorry I didn't read above posts
