What are your experiences on it. My brothers doctor who he just saw today put him on it and the side effects I read online are troublesome. My brother is already morbidly obese and can’t stand to gain anymore weight. He is almost 31 and could easily have a heart attack especially with all the stress he’s under
The new doctor changed all of his meds at one time. He lowered things and took him off things and put him on things. Plus he got angry at my brother to the point my mom had to tell him to back off. With my experience with pdocs you shouldn’t change everything at one time because if there’s an issue then you don’t know what’s causing it since everything was done at one time What are your thoughts? __________________ Ridin' with Biden |

Dear Mountaindewed,
Sometimes it can help to get a second opinion. Don't know if this is appropriate but it is what I would do if I were in a similar situation. Hopefully others here will have better ideas than mine. Sincerely yours, Yao Wen |

I told my mom all this and she said she agrees with me. He sees him again in 2 weeks and if it still doesn’t work out then my mom will find someone out of network.
You can tell who the bad mental health professionals are when they have immediate openings. I bet my own Pdocs waiting list is a year long. My current therapist is very nice but she can’t help me with the areas I need help in so she’s switching me to someone who does have a waiting list which I’ve been on since July. So I’m hoping she’s good. __________________ Ridin' with Biden |

I'm on the monthly abilify injections, it has helped me a lot, I haven't had any issues with it

I actually just started this med. it was added to my sertraline and honestly I’ve lost weight. It takes my appetite away and almost acts as a stimulant for me.
I googled abilify before taking it and I was super nervous as i struggle with my weight but so far I’ve had the opposite experience then what I was expecting. That being said everyone is different. Maybe your brother could try it out for a few weeks and see how he feels. Is this a concern for him as well or just for you? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I had a room mate with schizophrenia and her pdoc switched her to Abilify and she loved it. She said it gave her a happy boost about an hour after taking it. It didn't have any impact on her weight.

I had no problem with weight gain on Abilify. It was one of the least disruptive meds (side effect wise) I took.

My boys were overweight and on abilify. It's one that's is more weight neutral. I'm on the injection and it has the least amount of side effects for me.

Do you know what dose of Abilify your brother was started out on? Do you know all the other changes the doctor made?
I've taken Abilify a couple times over the years. The first time it was fantastic at first, but then fell into a very deep depression that lasted for a very long time (I have bipolar disorder). I do think though that that was more situational, because I dropped out of college (I was doing miscellaneous post-baccalaureate classes for fun) and started helping take care of my grandmother with my parents, which was a 24/7 job. The second time I took it, it was even better for my mood. It was very stimulating, which was good for me because I was very anergic and sleeping all the time at that time. The problem though that developed this time was in the higher doses (20-30 mg), I started to develop a compulsive spending habit. It was incredibly difficult to come off of (any time I would lower the dose, I would develop severe psychotic symptoms). We eventually managed to cross-titrate me to another antipsychotic. The compulsive spending mostly disappeared, but I still have troubles with it. Not sure if it permanently affected my reward center or something. As for weight gain, I never had an issue with it. The first time I took it, I was doing the ketogenic diet and lost 50 lb over 5 months while taking it. The second time, I had already gained a tremendous amount of weight from other psychiatrist meds, but the Abilify itself I don't believe caused any weight gain. I do, however, suspect that it may have affected my cholesterol and triglycerides negatively, as well as liver enzymes (I developed non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). I have just now (two years later) started to get my liver enzymes, cholesterol, and triglycerides under control. Again, not 100% sure it was the Abilify that did that, but antipsychotics are known to mess with that kind of thing. Be forewarned about the compulsive behavior thing though. Abilify is a dopamine partial agonist rather than a dopamine antagonist like most antipsychotics, and, like the Parkinsons's disease medications (which are dopamine full agonists), Abilify (and Rexulti) has a Black Box warning for compulsive behavioral issues. __________________ Diagnoses: Tourette's Disorder, OCD, ADHD-PI, Bipolar I Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Anxiety Disorder Unspecified Medications: Dyanavel XR 15 mg 30 mg/day Lamictal 300 mg/day Cymbalta 90 mg/day Lunesta 3 mg/night Dayvigo 10 mg/night |
