Hi everyone,

Does anyone have experience using Olanzapine as a PRN? I also take Rexulti 4 mg and Latuda 100 mg. The doctor from the ER added Olanzapine 5 mg to take as a PRN. He said start with half a tab and I can go up to a tab and a half if needed for hallucinations. Today is my first day taking it. So far I am not noticing anything but I am only trying 2.5 mg. So a very small dose. He said it is supposed to be relaxing. I'm trying to decide if I feel more relaxed. I heard it can cause weight gain. Sigh. That's all I need. But if it helps me I have to do it. I have an appointment with my PCP today so I will ask her what she knows about it. Then I scheduled an appointment with my psychiatrist for Wednesday next week (earliest I could get in) so he can give me a proper fill and refills since the ER doctor only gave me 10 days worth. Anyway, hopefully someone will be willing to share their experiences with this medication. HUGS Kit

I used to be on it, a long time ago, I don't remember much about it as it was many years ago but I know I didn't have any issues with it and it seemed to help

Zyprexa was a great drug for me I was on the highest recommended dosage 20mg. It had a lasting calming effect throughout the day and stopped intrusive thoughts. Unfortunately I had to trade it in for Saphris due to the fact that while on zyprexa I wanted to eat my couch. I am diabetic and it really made my blood sugar go through the roof partly due to the fact that I was always hungry. I put on 30 pounds in one year and finally said enough due to the side effects. Like I said it was a great drug for me I just didn't want to deal with the side effects. Hope it works out for you.

I take 10 mg olanzapine daily. It helps with my psychosis a lot. I wish I could get down to 5 mg, but I cannot at this point unfortunately. Anyway, I hope it helps you with hallucinations and delusions. Olanzapine definitely put a damper on my psychotic symptoms. Which was essentially what I needed back when I was having more psychotic symptoms. I would say it is a very effective drug for reducing and even eliminating psychosis. It didn't cause as much weight gain for me. That can be an issue for some.

Thanks everyone for your replies. So far I am liking it. I think I notice a slight increase in appetite but hopefully it won't be too much!

Watch the weight gain. I gained 15 pounds in two weeks, so my pdoc took me off of it right away - and I wasn't eating more - I was just one of those that it hit that way.

I have been on, and briefly off of, Zyprexa for more than eleven years. It helps me, but there is one troublesome side-effect I am not fond of. Trouble swallowing. Lately I have been on 25 mg per day, but I was on 30 mg per day for about 3 1/2 years. I can now swallow food better; the side-effect is still there, but better than it was. Back when I was on a much lower dose, for a little while I was using it PRN. I would take it when my delusions and paranoia were very prevalent sometimes. I also felt on edge a lot when I was on a much lower dose; so I would take it when I wanted to sleep.

I still feel on edge, just not in the same way. I always have tension in the back of my neck, and I have torticollis as a result of my medication. It feels like I cannot control it. If I position my neck so that I don't have torticollis, it just goes back to that position involuntarily. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that my antipsychotic medication blocks my dopaminergic neurotransmission at my post-synaptic neurons. So I start to make the decision to control my torticollis, but since the medication has an affinity for the neurotransmitter, dopamine, at my post-synaptic neurons, it prevents me from continuing to make the decision to control my torticollis. Sorry for the rambling.
