My pdoc has prescribed Zyprexa prn for my severe anxiety/panic. Is anyone here on Zyprexa or Zyprexa prn?

I'm on generic Zyprexa (Olanzapine) for 5 mg. Take 1 to 1/5 tablets 1 to 2 times a day. I usually only take half a pill in the morning and half a pill at night. It is very relaxing. Like not benzo relaxing but relaxing. I'm a bit worried about weight gain as it seems to make me hungry and I am on a really low dose. I don't want to gain weight, I am trying to lose weight. But I haven't had any other side effects. I don't notice the relaxation as much now as I did when I first took it but I'm sure it is still there. I take mine for auditory hallucinations though. I do have anxiety (GAD) and I have had panic attacks but I would probably just take my benzo for those, tbh. HUGS Kit

I take 10 mg Zyprexa every day. It has eliminated my psychotic symptoms. I would imagine taking it PRN lessens the side effects significantly, as I have noticed weight gain from my daily use of it. It has also potentially (I say this because I am not sure) increased my cholesterol levels. Also, I know it works pretty well because whenever I try to go down on it, I have a resurgence of weird symptoms.

Zyprexa was a great drug for me I was on the highest recommended dosage 20mg. It had a lasting calming effect throughout the day and stopped intrusive thoughts. Unfortunately I had to trade it in for Saphris due to the fact that while on zyprexa I wanted to eat my couch. I am diabetic and it really made my blood sugar go through the roof partly due to the fact that I was always hungry. I put on 30 pounds in one year and finally said enough due to the side effects. Like I said it was a great drug for me I just didn't want to deal with the side effects. Hope it works out for you.

Yes, I am. I take 25 mg per day of Olanzapine (Zyprexa) ODT. I was on Zydis, but my insurance would not cover it in the dose I was taking - because Zydis is not available in 20 mg tablets. So I switched to Olanzapine ODT. They are pharmacologically equivalent, so it does not really matter, I guess.

Thank you, Asparagus. Yes, pdoc did say that prn will reduce the chance of weight gain. I gained so much when I was on Seroquel. __________________ |

I always refused to be on it because I heard it’s the worst drug when it comes to weight gain. I can’t be on anything that can cause weight gain because the weight gain side effect always out weighs the good side effects and it just becomes a huge problem. And my doctor respects my decisions. So we have decided on no weight gain meds.

Thanks to each of you for the replies. They're very helpful. I gained over 100lbs. on Seroquel - and acquired all the health problems that result from gaining all that weight. Having a mental illness makes life so complicated.

10mg of olanzepine every evening for over a year. I gained 10lbs? It is a miracle for depersonalization/derealization induced panic attacks.

It made me lay around and do nothing except for gain weight. I’m naturally very thin, so that’s not a big deal. Just numbed me out.
It’s worked wonders for my aunt who has psychosis though. Everybody is different. Seems to make a lot of ppl gain weight tho. |

Dear user, I and lot's of my former friends were on Zyprexa. It ruined my teeth. Weight gain is the least of symptoms. I even reported it through old Psych central several years ago. Be careful if you have light, and damagable teeth, and a choice, don't use it. Or, try using it less. Wouldn't recommend it to anybody.
My friend M. took Zyprexa 20 mg per day,he lost teeth, and had psycotic episodes plus he didn't stop having hallucinations. My former boyfriend was banned of Z, his doctor didn't want him to suffer. I got shots of Zyprexa even though I didn't need it,I was never psychotic. It was so bad. Read the instructions carefully, and be aware. Best of luck. |

I never used to think that there was actually a difference between Zyprexa and Olanzapine. But apparently, Olanzapine can cause teeth discoloration as opposed to Zyprexa. Here's the article:

I was on 5-20 mg it made me sleepy but didn't get rid of my issues. So I stop it. It didn't help my anxiety.
