U.S. Supreme Court sides with doctors challenging opioid convictions

I'm glad to see this ruling. My psychiatrist agrees to my taking opioids because my pain makes me feel depressed, not good since I am bipolar. I think the government has gone overboard with acting like anyone who takes such drugs will become an addict, so getting regular docs to only prescribe them short-term. I go to a pain doc, authorized to give me long-term treatment. I still have to bring in my pills to get them counted and to take random urine testing. Make me feel like a criminal....
I've taken them for years and have never taken more than prescribed.....

I agree with you. I think there are other ways to address the concerns of the government and citizens. I suffered enormously once when I was not given inadequate pain medications. I can understand what the general population thinks and how elected representatives want to be helpful, but I just think that solutions must be found that do not punish people who validly need pain relief.

I definitely believe opioids have their place. I was on them for 5-6 years before I had surgery. I needed them. And I think( don’t quote me) the stats are something like 1 in 4 becomes an addict,…well that 3 in 4 that don’t!!!

Well... from the sound of it, at least the court has gotten one thing right.

I completely agree. Since the 1980's "war on drugs" this country has cracked down in all the wrong places - valid use of prescription medication, for example. The whole movement is a massive failure.

I was just reading an article about how Tramadol was being used as an SNRI in the past and it helped many with anxiety/depression when nothing else has helped

Pain in itself can cause depression. It certainly does for me!

Definitely! Pain can also cause exhaustion which, of course, can also lead to depression. Annnd...pain can cause insomnia...also leading to depression and exhaustion. Bottom line, chronic pain is never a good thing and it needs to be taken seriously.

There used to be a great pain website. It had tracking sheets to print out that were for your doctors. They were excellent and my pain doctor thought they were the best tracking sheets. They had sleep on them too because as Beth pointed out pain impacts sleep. But sadly the funding wasn’t there and the site is no more. My pain doctor was great. She had me on long lasting pain meds which meant I didn’t have to take as many pills a day as many people have to. Instead of every 4 hours mine lasted 6-8 hours plus I was on fentanyl patches. After my surgery I went down quickly on the meds and she weaned me off with no problems.
