Hello everyone,
I'm newly diagnosed with bipolar after long battles with depression and suffering long enough with a "wrong diagnosis" and being put on wrong medication by an incompetent doctor, I changer my psych doctor

Anyways I have a few questions if anybody has answers for me

I’m currently in a bipolar hypo mania and my doctor put me on Depakote and Olanzapine and Prozac.
Now I’ve read online that Depakote is used for depression episodes not manias. to be honest I’m enjoying it and I want it lasts as long as possible before I sink into deposing soon.
So, my question is what it will do to my hypo-mania?

Hi @kyo2hd I have a friend that was on an antidepressant (not the ones you mentioned) and the psych doc changed that when the depression eased and mania started. I am not qualified to advise you on your meds but you could recontact your doc if it has been a while or pose your question to your pharmacist.

Hope you get the support you are looking for. @CANDC

Welcome to My Support Forums and the bipolar world! and
I agree with CANDC. That's something to ask a professional. Although I've had bipolar for 21 years and have been on a bunch of meds, including a brief stint with Depakote, I have no idea what that does to hypomania. But we might know the answer to some other questions.

Medicine affects everyone differently, what works for one person doesn’t nessacely work for another. Even though is a new rule of thumb those with mania shouldn’t be taking antidepressants.

I do take antidepressants and a mood stabilizer for my bipolar--although a former psychiatrist was going to yank me off of my antidepressants. But I have only had more hypomania, not full-fledged.

To answer your question Depakote is an anti convulsant that works on both mania and depression (and in my experience even more so mania than depression).
Prozac however is an SSRI/antidepressant that can cause mania/worsen it.
That being said everybody's biology is a little different so even though there is typically a general rule of thumb there will be outliers who might have different experiences from most people which is why there are tons of medications and they're coming up with new ones all the time and it's hard to find two bipolar people on the same cocktail.

kyo2hd welcome! Good Shabbos. I spent some time visiting family on (kibbutz) Or-Haner some years ago.

I'm sorry, I don't have experience to share about Depakote.

Please, come visit us on the Bipolar Disorder board.

Thanks for your reply, well it did curb my hypomania so now we know lol
I'm still trying to manage my emotions according to my current mind set which is difficult.

Thanks for clearing that up, i do agree that everyone is biologically different, I've seen people who talk bad about certain medication how it didn't help while others call it "a God sent"
