Goods? Bads? What's your experience with lithium?

Hi @Beth. I'm not truly sure of what lithium does/has done for my stability, but I must tell you my pdoc swears by it. I just can't compare it because i was immediately administered lithium after my very first crisis. 6 years later I'm having some hypothyroidism and I pee more frequently than before, those would be my only complaints at the moment. I've needed some dose readjustments, hope it works out. C ya.

I take lithium too! I also have hypothyroidism, the treatment is one pill in the morning. One thing I found out the hard way is that some high blood pressure meds will result in toxicity. I used to be really worried about toxicity but having gone through a minor episode with no long term effects, I am much more relaxed about it. I still get 3 monthly blood tests and check any new meds with my pharmacist. It has been a great medicine for keeping me stable for over 5 years. (I do take antidepressants or antipsychotics with it for emergent episodes)

Thank you @Bugtussel
Your input is very helpful. So it sounds like something to be aware of is a possible interaction between lithium and med for high blood pressure? __________________ |

Definitely check in with your Doc and pharmacist for interactions. I experienced an interaction that caused toxicity but was caught in time so no consequences. I don't take a high blood pressure med - just use diet and lifestyle to control it. There is probably a high blood pressure med that works with lithium.

I took lithium some time ago (10+ years ago) to help with my severe depression, as it was supposed to be an augmenting agent. I am pretty sure it helped, but I was on so many other meds and doing so many other treatments at the time that I'm not totally sure what its effects were. As others are saying, definitely be sure to check in with your doctor reguarly about it, as I know it can cause lithium toxicity (of course, I'm no expert on this). I have heard good things about it being an augmenting agent for depression though. And also it helps people with bipolar a lot, I've also heard, though I'm once again not sure on the specifics there since I don't have bipolar. Anyway, hope it helps you!

I used to be on 1800 mg of Lithium, it really messed me up, caused lithium toxicity and I ended up in the ICU for a week and my kidneys were shutting down so I had to have dialysis, I was also having seizures. It was a nightmare experience and I will never go back on it again, too many bad memories, but I know it can be helpful to some people

Yeah I didn't really want to say anything because I know it helps a lot of people, but Lithium gave me chronic kidney disease that didn't get better after going off it.

Thanks to each of you for your excellent input. I am afraid of kidney problems. I just hope I don't get them. Although right now I don't even care.
