Does anyone here find that medication helps them initiate and maintain a normal sleeping pattern? The reason why I am asking this is because I am on 30mg Olanzapine and 30mg Escitalopram, and yet my sleeping pattern is still horrendous. I usually don't fall asleep until well after midnight, and end up sleeping into the afternoon everyday. I just cannot seem to get into a normal sleeping pattern.

I had that problem too but now I take various herbal supplements that have given me back good sleep. I told my doctor about these herbal products to make sure they didn't interfere with my prescription medications.
Since I am not a licensed physician, I cannot offer advice about herbal products. Only a physician can do this. Herbal products are sometimes not processed with the same safety regulations as prescription medications and products can vary by brand as to purity and potency. For financial reasons, herbal products are not usually subject to quality medical research such as double-blind placebo controlled studies. So sorry I could not be helpful to you. Sleep problems are awful. They can really mess with a person There are prescription hypnotics that a licensed physician can prescribe for those who take energizing types of antidepressants that cause insomnia and daytime sleepiness. I have heard of a few like Ambien and Trazadone. But only a physician with one's entire medical history is qualified to address questions about these and whether or not they are appropriate or inappropriate. I sure hope you can find the best outcome for your sleep difficulties! |

Thanks, Yaowen. There is a certified Chinese herbalist in my area that I could perhaps inquire about. He is also an acupuncturist. I have seen him before but had to stop due to financial reasons. I wish his services were covered by insurance. I have heard of the two hypnotics you mentioned. And you captured and delineated the very essence of my problem. I have insomnia during the night, and somnolence during the day. I have heard of a medication called Loxapine, and someone attributed this drug to helping him get into a regular sleep pattern. Anyway, thank you for your helpful and kind words, Yaowen. I will think about maybe going back to that CCH practitioner and ask him about herbal products that could help me get onto a regular sleep pattern. Or maybe I could tell my psychiatrist about my issue and see if he has any helpful recommendations.

I would talk to the psychiatrist if I were you. I have been taking trazodone at night for over 20 years. It helps me and is not addictive, but it is a prescription medication.
I'm kind of wary about Chinese herbalists and acupuncturists. Some don't really believe in Western medicine at all. I saw one who told me to stop taking all my psych meds. She didn't even know what I was on. Advice like that could kill a person. |

Thanks for the advice, downandlonely. I think I will take you up on that and tell my psychiatrist about my sleep issue and see what he says. I might mention the medication Loxapine to him and see what his opinion of it is. The CCH I was seeing was not actually anti-Western medicine. He seemed to have a moderate stance when it came to Eastern Medicine and Western Medicine.

Right before bedtime (around 10:30pm or so), I take 150mg of Trazodone, 2mg clonazepam, 1.25 mg risperdone........I usually sleep from about 11pm to 6-7am. I also take escitalopram 20mg, but I take that in the morning. What time of day do you take the olanzapine and escitalopram? __________________ "Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about....Please, be kind, always"..........Robin Williams Diagnoses: Major Depressive Disorder (treatment-resistant) Anxiety/Panic Disorder (treatment- resistant} OCD (treatment-resistant) Agoraphobia (treatment-resistant) Chronic Insomnia (able to sleep with current medication) |

Taking the Lexapro so late can cause trouble sleeping. My meds (Seroquel, Haldol, Valium, Lamotrigine) are pretty sedating so I take all except the lamotrigine at night. In the morning I set an alarm for 7am and wake up, take my meds, and then go back to sleep if I'm still tired. Is this possible for you? It's important to take your meds around the same time every day as well for them to work as well as possible.

Try putting the a!arm clock across the room from your bed. threat you have to get up out of bed to shut the alarm off. I have had sleep problems for years. I know how difficult this is! Have you tried Rozerum??

I could try that. I have never tried Rozerem. The only sleep medicines I have tried over the years are ZzzQuil, Belsomra, Restoril, and Melatonin.
