Sometimes I go through phases of being sick of taking my meds. I’m still taking them. I just feel so frustrated that I need them. Urgh!
Does anyone else ever get this feeling?

Oh, yes all the time. I’ve gone off a couple meds and I am in the process of weaning myself off a stomach med..

….but I don’t mess with my psyche meds! Oh no, I learned the hard way to leave those alone

Thanks for your reply Nammu

I know what you mean.

I’ve come off my psych meds before which has gone very badly twice so I know I should keep taking them.

I think I’m just so irritated by the fact I need them! Maybe it’s just a PMS thing or something!

I just keep imagining doomsday scenario s in which medicine won’t be available so I want to be on as few as possible. But ideally none. I don’t want to be on any either.

10 years ago I went off meds and ultimately the outcome was very bad for me, to the point of my still not having fully overcome the negative consequences, so I now know I need medications. I am also on a truly amazing, basically miraculous medication that prevents migraines that used to be so bad that I wanted euthanasia at some point to escape them. The psych meds currently are mild and do not produce significant side effects. I count myself very lucky and I do not resent needing to take medications. I think of all the good things that they are doing for me and I am grateful for modern medicine that allows me access to medications that make my life so appreciably better.

Yes. Im tired sometimes of relying on them for my sanity.
I feel like a psycho and I'm worried I have Brain damage from all these meds years and years. But i think I need them.
Hopefully not the rest of my life.

I totally agree. I'm so sick of taking meds that don't really help much. If the meds helped I wouldn't mind taking them at all. But the help I get from them is modest at best. And at this point in my life, and having been on psych meds for close to 30 years, they have definitely changed my brain so now I really have to stay on them forever. And of course they aren't benign, as in, they definitely can have adverse effects on body processes and organs so it doubly sucks! (But of course, mental illness has really adverse effects on physical health too so it's just a bind, whichever way you look at it)

That's what I'm worried about.
The effects on the brain. Over years and years of stopping and changing meds etc.

Repeated episodes cause brain damage too. If the meds don't work, no use in taking them, but if you can find a cocktail that helps...

Take the meds, live a good life, get (potential) brain damage
vs.
Don't take the meds, live a crap life, get (definite) brain damage

I don't know for sure if the meds cause brain damage or just change the brain or the amount of neurons firing, serotonin and dopamine?

I think it depends on the med. Haldol gave me "pseudo-Parkinson's" as my nurse practitioner put it, but supposedly lithium prevents Alzheimer's and SSRI's promote cell growth in the hippocampus.

I know SSRIs work by blocking reuptake of serotonin so more of it's available/it doesn't get re-absorbed by the nerve cells.

Yes I am very very tired of taking meds. They help me and I can't stop taking them. All of my meds, not just psych. It's lifelong for me, and I have been taking them for a long time. I won't stop but I hate taking them.
