I have chronic hep and have had problems with heavy drinking in the (kinda recent) past. My doc knows this but put me on 1500mg/day (my levels are in a therapeutic range).

Maybe the liver won't like it?

Can you get your liver enzymes checked to see how they are where you stand right now and then discuss your concerns with your doc? I know some meds are harder on the liver than others, but they all do affect the liver to some extent. My pdoc wants mine checked every 6 months and I don't drink at all.

My liver enzymes were normal on Depakote but platelets dropped dangerously and I had to stop. The medication that really messed up my liver enzymes was Thorazine. Even in tiniest doses. It turned out that Thorazine is notoriously hepatotoxic. I came off of it and AST/ALT returned to normal.

Do read Valproate - LiverTox - NCBI Bookshelf about hepatotoxicity of Valproate.
