I mentioned this in the health section but does anyone else take this? I've been prescribed 10mg for GI pain by a medical doctor and it works great but its orginal use was for depression. Another doctor of mine said they don't use it for mental health much anymore, and my pdoc majorly freaked out when he found out I was being put on it and I had to agree to have my mom be in control of it and stuff.
I haven't noticed any side effects. Just a better quality of life that is noticeable to other people and myself. __________________ I'm Blue |

Some people are simply biased against very old medications for a variety of reasons.
Elavil can cause many side effects but you are only taking a small dose. The important part is that you personally do not experience side effects. Yes the original use was for depression and it is effective, it just has been eclipsed by SSRI medications and stuff. But it has many other uses, notably for sleep, migraine prevention, and as a muscle relaxant. It is very dangerous in OD which is probably why your mom had to get involved. __________________ Bipolar I w/psychotic features Last inpatient stay in 2018 Geodon 40 mg Seroquel 75 mg Gabapentin 1200 mg+Vitamin B-complex (against extrapyramidal side effects) Long term side effects from medications, some of them discontinued: - hypothyroidism - obesity BMI ~ 38 |

If I remember right, Elavil is one of the tricyclic antidepressants, which have more side effects and are more dangerous than the newer medications in terms of overdose, so, yes, it does make sense that you have to be more careful about it. Once, I tried a tricyclic antidepressant, but it didn't work out because it gave me a bit of orthostatic hypotension. (In layperson's terms, it means the blood rushed to my head whenever I stood up, a feeling I could not tolerate).
I'm glad that Elavil is helping you. I am taking a tetracyclic antidepressant, mirtazapine, which has been around for years, too. I am not sure if it has been around for as long as Elavil, as I believe, due to my research on psychiatric medication, Elavil was discovered before mirtazapine was, but of course, I could be wrong on that. __________________ "Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
