I have just been put on this for sleep. Has anyone ever tried it? Are there any major side effects?
I only ask because I was on Seroquel and it was AWFUL for me so I am a bit weary of anything now. Thanks, BJ

Hey, I had this YEARS ago for sleep/anxiety.
I really helped my anxiety but knocked me out, so I'd say it would be a great sleeping pill. I can't remember having any negative side effects besides sleepiness and thirst (maybe). For a bit you might feel sleepy still, or hard to wake, in the morning so you might want to count on that if you have to be somewhere and allow extra time. If memory serves me, it's an antihistimine and that's why it makes so drowsy. Antihistimines (some of them, or maybe all...I'm not sure) have a calming affect and can be used for a couple of different things from nausea to anxiety to sleeplessness. I'm pretty sure that's how I remember what the dr. told me, but don't take it to the bank. ![]() Good luck tonight hon and let us know! KD

Yep, this is what it says about it:

Quote: GENERIC NAME: hydroxyzine BRAND NAMES: Atarax; Vistaril DRUG CLASS AND MECHANISM: Hydroxyzine is an antihistamine with anticholinergic (drying) and sedative properties that is used to treat allergic reactions. The body releases histamine during several types of allergic reactions and--to a lesser extent--during some viral infections, such as the common cold. When histamine binds to its receptors on cells, it causes the cells to release chemical messengers that lead to sneezing, itching, and increased mucus production. Antihistamines, like histamine, binds to the histamine receptors, but when they bind to the receptors they do not stimulate the cells to release chemical messengers. In addition, they prevent histamine from binding and stimulating the cells. Hydroxyzine itself has no activity. After ingestion, it is converted to its active form. The active form of hydroxyzine is a drug called cetirizine (Zyrtec). Although, both hydroxyzine and cetirizine act as antihistamines, hydroxyzine causes more sedation than cetirizine. The FDA approved hydroxyzine in 1956. DOSING: Hydroxyzine has its maximal effect about 30 to 60 minutes after it is taken. Its effects last for 4 to 6 hours. The recommended dose for treating pruritus is 25 mg given 3 or 4 times daily. When used for sedation, the recommended dose is 50 to 100 mg. Anxiety and tension are managed with 50 to 100 mg 4 times daily. Hydroxyzine can be taken with or without food.

Link to site for further information: http://www.medicinenet.com/hydroxyzine/article.htm

I had a prescription for it once when I had dermatitis. It was to stop the itching. My dose was 50mg, and it helped the itching, but it didn't really make me sleepy. Perhaps I had a really low dose? Incidentally, my dog has been taking it for years for her allergies. It doesn't cause the same side effects in dogs as it does humans, except maybe for dry mouth sometimes. But it's cheap and seems pretty safe.
Good luck! gg

Thanks so much KD and GG!!! I have some anxiety(go figure) about taking it, but am willing to give it a try anyway.
I sure hope it knocks me out cuz my insomnia isn't fun. I'll let you know how it goes tonight! BJ

I took 50mg for a panic attack one time. It knocked me out for like 17 hours!
Later I was put on it for sleep and anxiety issues. I take 25mg twice daily. At first it made me REALLY sleepy, now my body is used to it and it helps keep me less anxious. Give it a bit of time so your body can adjust. Hope it works. |

So far so good! I didn't get to sleep right away, in fact it was more like 2 hours. Once I was asleep I was OUT! Felt good to get a good sleep and not feel crappy in the morning.
Thanks for the input all of you! bj
