I take one Benadryl at bedtime and have for years. I'd say YES, one can be addicted to them.

Like any anti-histamine, too much / too many can have bad effects on one's kidneys....

Stopping them, if you take many, will cause a rebound sinusitis. Possibly tapering off would work.

Yes, as JW says there is a potential for a psychological addiction to Benadryl™ (diphenhydramine), and a slow tapering of he daily dose is recommended. Some people with chronic allergies need to take Benadryl on a daily basis, but the total dose (when taken on a chronic basis) is usually under 100mg/day.

Why do you feel you need to take Benadryl so often; is it the drowsiness (anticholinergic) effect you are looking for, or something else? (just curious) - Cam

Shelby are you taking any meds for your depression?

I know my family physician suggested that I take 2 benadryl b/c they act as a "nerve pill" for short term only after a death of a very close relative. I would think if used to replace meds for anxiety , they could become very psychologically addictive.

Only a suggestion, but in your shoes, I would definitely see my family doctor to discuss it with him or her.

Take Care!

your post instantly hit a note with me because i have taken ridiculous amounts of benadryl at many points in my life for years now. by years, i mean almost a decade. it's what i did when i couldn't get other substances.

i would say that, as lame as it sounds, you can have an addiction to benadryl. as any excess of medicine is bad, i'm sure it's an addiction worth trying to stop.

i was so relieved that there were other people... Bendryl Addiction?
